I recently bought a used DAC2D, seemingly fairly lightly-used. Got it running with Win7, Foobar w/ ASIO drivers, it's recognizing all my hi-res material and the proper lights are lighting up where they should. The only problem is, once it's warmed up it doesn't want to stay on; sometimes I'll walk away to come back to it turned off, other times it'll go kaput in the middle of what I'm listening to.

Changed power cords, tried plugging in to a different output on the Surgex, no change. My suspicion is that it's an iffy solder joint somewhere, but the unit is still so new to me that maybe there's a setting I inadvertently set when I was turning on the USB 2.0 mode. Thanks!

The Benchmark DAC is autonomous so it shouldn't matter if the computer goes to sleep, the DAC should remain "on". It may not be a dry joint - the fact that it turns off in the middle of a listening session suggests a possibly failing capacitor on one of the power supply rails. I have a DAC1HGC and they tend to run quite hot so that will affect service life of "perishable" components like electrolytic capacitors.
Contact Benchmark directly - they will service it or perhaps offer a trade-in deal for a DAC3.

Have you checked the power management setting on your computer? It sounds to me that you may have the default Windows USB power setting selected. This turns off the USB out to an external device after a while (while you are streaming the computer thinks it is idling).

Go to Control Panel/Hardware & Sound/Power Options. Then select your power setting, open it and select "Change advanced power settings", then "USB Settings" expand it and look at " USB Selective Suspend Setting".

Hmm. Checked that all USB auto-off settings were disabled for both on AC power and battery, and still getting frequent cut-outs when warmed up. I'm having a feeling it's something internal :(

Yes, having eliminated the computer's auto USB shut off it now seems that some kind of protection device is being triggered. That could, of course, be expected if the warm up was an extreme version of "warm". However I am sure that you would have noticed.

I can only suggest that you contact Benchmark to see if they have any advice.
