Qobuz has already dropped prices in the USA leaving many European subscribers miffed.

I am writing from a UK subscriber viewpoint but assume that what they are doing here applies similarly to France, Ireland, Germany. Netherlands etc. albeit in euro.

They are now offering only two plans. MP3 has been dropped ( as in the USA) and also the CD level plan. All is now hi-res; Studio Premier or Sublime+ being the two options remaining. Studio Premier is 14.99 monthly and Sublime+ reduced to 249.99 gbp per annum. Those subscriptions include VAT @ 20% if you want to compare with other plans.

EDIT: Since writing the above I have heard from a Qobuz subscriber in Ireland that , at this time, the prices and plans for his country have not changed. I suspect that they will eventually but Qobuz may be phasing changes across the various countries over time to avoid creating a huge amount of administration in one hit.

The usual offer to renew your plan now and have what remains of your existing subscription credited is available. However please ensure that you have received an email from Qobuz with the link to do this. Do not cancel your existing subscription and open a new one at the new price as you will not receive any credit against your old plan.

I guess that Qobuz' experiment at the end of last year in the USA with dropped prices (now permanent) must have shown that lowering subscriptions increases the number of members outweighing the top line loss of revenue.

That's good news for those outside the U.S.!

As a U.S. subscriber I signed up as soon as they lowered the price. Let's hope that the lower price did in fact gain a lot more subscribers to keep the service healthy.

I have Qobuz at $15/mo & Tidal at $12/mo (veteran discount) so that's not bad for two 'hi-res' services.

It's interesting that HDTracks is sending me more download discount offers than ever before. I wonder if they're feeling the pain with the shift toward streaming vs downloads?

Is it advisable to have two services? I had Tidal, but I wanted hi-rez so I switched to Qobuz. Should I have kept both?

I'm paying $15 per month for Qobuz. I was paying $5.99 per month for Tidal with a military discount until you or somebody told me that a military subscription didn't provide high quality sound. I thought that was pretty shitty because it was like the military were being punished instead rewarded for their service. I guess it kind of pissed me off and that's the main reason I quit Tidal.

Anyway, what do you see as the advantage of subscribing to both Tidal and Qobuz?

Thanks,
John Elison

You subscribed to the wrong Tidal service.

I'm paying $11.99/mo for the highest quality Tidal streaming and $15.74/mo for Qobuz. They sound comparable to me depending on what's playing.

There's definite overlap between the two services but I find more albums that I like on Tidal. Since I use Roon as my interface I'm isolated from the different interfaces used by Tidal and Qobuz. You might want to try both and determine which one you prefer for easily finding the music you enjoy most. It's really a personal decision.

You needed the Military HiFi service at $11.99 - You just signed up for the wrong streaming level.

" It's interesting that HDTracks is sending me more download discount offers than ever before. I wonder if they're feeling the pain with the shift toward streaming vs downloads?"

Around two years ago there was a lot of news about a forthcoming streaming service from them ( HDStreams ?) which was to rely upon the use of MQA. Nothing further seems to have been heard about it.

I removed myself from their weekly listings as they do not compete on price with Sublime+ and their offerings seemed mainly in the pop/rock field which is generally not my thing. Further quite a few things which caught my attention through inmates mentioning them were not available in my country.

Yes, streaming is a direct substitution for downloads and it will be interesting to see the industry revenue figures for 2019 when they are released.

As I recall I didn't have to do anything here in the US to get the new price. I was on a monthly subscription and they just renewed at the new price the next month. If I got a small credit it was just a blip on the bank account.

OTOH, when I changed my cable subscription they cut the price in half and I'm still getting credits from them. Our bills have been $0 for months now. I haven't looked to see exactly how that happened either.

When I retired I went through all of our monthly bills, and the cable stuck out as way too much considering how little TV we watch. I had both Qobuz and Tidal and I dropped Tidal, and then Qobuz reduced the price. All this media stuff adds up, and then there are the cell phones...

" As I recall I didn't have to do anything here in the US to get the new price. "

Sorry I didn't make it clear that I was referring to those with an annual subscriptions such as Qobuz Sublime+ members who need to follow the procedure.

I am aware of someone on another forum with an annual subscription who, when the USA process changed, didn't follow the correct procedure and was complaining that he didn't get any credit. As he had closed his account rather than renewing it at the new rate I guess that he had effectively deleted himself. So when he opened a brand new account at the new price the computer would have been unaware of any credit owing. As far as it was concerned it was just a new account that had been opened.

Of course those with monthly accounts renew monthly anyway.

I may not renew my Sublime+ right away as although I probably have 3-4 months left on my current subscription I could do without an unanticipated approx. £175 bill right now despite the longer term benefit.

And now, over a month later, I see how much TV I can watch. It's a good thing I didn't cancel the cable. I get fast internet and cable and being stuck inside means a lot of TV, more than I've watched in years.
