This is great news, Kal. I look forward to your impressions of the UHP-H1. I've had mine for ten days in a modest system with an Arcam 50 watt integrated and B&W 683S2s.

So far it's been a good cd player, very good SACD player and an excellent Blu-Ray player. I don't know if it will settle in anymore but I'm satisfied with the purchase.

Cheers,

Scott

Why did you choose the Sony over the Oppo ? .My experience of Sony BD player 1000ES is that is superior both in sound & picture to Oppo

Sony's reputation for making great BDP/SACD players, price, and convenience(being able to walk into Best Buy and purchase instead of ordering). I only needed stereo analogue out as well.

Kal, are you working on a formal review of the UHP-H1 for Stereophile or just comparing it to the OPPO out of curiosity? I'm still really liking this player. It has settled in nicely.

Cheers,

Scott

Must we wait until November Stereophile MITR for a answer to Sony v Oppo However I no longer see Stereophile I have always found Sony to have better sound & picture and much better value than Oppo

From reviews I read that no Universal player is going to be as good as a dedicated player especially for CDs & SACD.s

I really enjoyed your review, Kal. It doesn't happen very often but it is always interesting and fun to read a professional review of a component that I actually use.

I am now sure I do not need to try different interconnects on my UHP-H1. You described the audio from the analogue outs perfectly. I do wish the bass was deeper and the music a bit more refined but I do find I can still enjoy it.

We have enjoyed listening to music from the UHP-H1 but we really love the outstanding picture we see from DVDs and Blu-Ray disc. In our humble 2-channel system I was surprised how much better the UHP-H1 is compared to our Sony BDP-6200 in regards to both audio and video.

Regarding the digital outs; in reading your review I gather that I should try the coax or TOSLINK digital out to my DAC (I'm guessing you were using the DACs in your AVRs) to hear an upgrade in sound from CDs, SACDs etc., would that be correct?

Well, I purchased my Bowers and Wilkins 683 S2s after reading your review. Now you've reviewed the Sony UHP-H1 that I use. If you find the time would you review the most affordable, best sounding 300 watt amplifier you have heard so I can round out my system, please.:-)

Cheers,

Scott

From CDs, yes, but no SACD output over Coax/TOSlink. Only HDMI.

And which one might that be? :-)

Thanks for the info, Kal. I will have to try my DAC soon.

"And which one might that be? :-)"

I wish I knew. I'll continue to follow your column and reviews to find the best candidates.

I would be curious to read a comparison between the new Sony and the older 5000ES blu-ray spinner.

What is an "Okay" review ?, which was preferred Oppo or Sony, I have not made up my mind, have not heard latest models, however on past performance prefer Sony. You have said you were not impressed with Oppo. I get the impression that the review amounts to a draw ?

Many thanks Kal, however I would like to know the Sony UHP-H1 via HDMI compares with the Oppo 105 ,should have put that in my Thread.

That comparison was not available. The system with the 105 (no D) has no HDMI processor option.

HDMI processor option ? I do not understand why a mch SQ comparison can not be made between Sony UHP-H1 & Oppo105 using HDMI. Fortunately I no longer have to choose as my faulty Sony XA5400ES is serviceable.

The 105 is used with the analog outputs in a system that has no preamp/processor. As a result, there is nothing to accept HDMI input in that system.

Hi Kal, I have just re read your review and note you say the Sony digital sound is competitive with the Oppo 103 which is disappointing because I bought a 103 and found the BD sound so poor especially HF compared with my Sony BDP-1000ES player that I got a refund. However I am going to buy the Sony UHP-H1 a modded multi-region one.
