I have a friend with an Exemplar modded 3910, and his transport has gone from flaky to not reading SACDs. Does anyone know if Denon will still replace these transports and on a modded unit? He hasn't had luck speaking with Denon customer service. Thanks

I don't know if they can be serviced, but it shouldn't be hard to buy a used 3910 on ebay or elsewhere and switch out the transport.

The problem is short of buying a new in box unit, one can't tell the number of hours that transport would have on it.

I was experiencing a similar problem a few months ago.... I opened the transport up and cleaned the lens. See the thread below:

If the display shows 00 00 00 when you hit play, and nothing else happens, you may need to replace the laser. This costs around $25 and is not too difficult to find or replace---details including step by step instructions are in the thread below, see the series of posts by Michidragon. I did it without too much difficulty on my APL Denon,

good luck,

David

In addition to some good previous pointers, I can add this. If the unit is playing CD fine and maybe SACDs at times, check & resolder the ICs. Easily said than done bacause the IC contacts are tight, but I did. This was so long ago that I can't be more specific.

Oh, yes, there may be another symptom. When the 3910 has warmed up fully, after playing CDs for example, if it is more likely play SACDs, the chips contacts are the likely place to look into.

My 3910's transport had been recently "fixed" when I bought it 2nd hand. The whole thing was replaced. Yet, it still acted up. The seller offered to take it back but I had a feeling that cold solder could be playing a role...lucky guess.
