You bet it's worth fixing an original PAS. And, it doesn't have to cost a lot! This subject comes up often enough in on-line forums, so I've been wanting to demonstrate that it can be done for short $

You can pick up a used ARC SP4/5/7 LS3 for that price. Nuts. I think if you already had a PAS, then yes, I would consider upgrading the unit. But going out and purchasing one used at current prices is probably not worth it considering the sonic differences between that unit and as you say a used CJ.

It would, of course, be smart to weigh the costs. One thing that I'd be concerned about with a used ARC or CJ or whatever is the relative [un]availability of documentation and support vs. the readily available documentation and support for Dynaco. It should be a lot easier to work on the Dynaco. To get a CJ or ARC refreshed may mean an increased likelihood of sending it out - which can get very costly.

The link in my original post of this thread leads to a spreadsheet with some basic refreshing suggestions for the PAS for as little as about $20 with options to go up in cost in progressive steps if desired or needed. Good for DIYers. But, if you are not a DIYer, then my suggestion may not apply.

As far as the sound quality, I try not to emphasize this too much because I just don't think people will believe it, but my [completely] refreshed PAS does a remarkable job of keeping up with my Cary SLP-98L and Parasound Halo JC2...
