Webern is supposedly a tough nut to crack, and a composer I've unjustly avoided. But when you find a way in through the gorgeous Im Sommerwind and the early Passacaglia it starts to make sense.

I started off with Rattle, went one better with the Sony Boulez and inevitably came across the Cleveland/Dohnnanyi recordings which are nothing short of amazing. It may be that these recordings can't be surpassed, but I'd like to get some views on Webern's total recorded output.

At the moment enjoying Im Sommerwind under Ormandy....

Five Pieces For Orchestra, Op. 10
I've always enjoyed the Antal Dorati/LSO performance released by Mercury (1962). If you decide to purchase a download copy, the HDTT reissue is excellent.

Five Pieces For String Quartet, op. 5 (Funf Satze fur Streichquartett Op. 5)
Six Bagatelles for String Quartet, op. 9
Cuiroga Quartet does a very nice performance of both works (Cobra Records, 2011. And there is also Julliard Quartet (RCA, 1961).

The faster Webern's music is played, the better I like the recording.

Those early Webern works have never caught on with me, posted on June 15, 2025 at 13:50:14

. . . unlike early Schoenberg (Verklarte Nacht, Gurre-Lieder). In fact, Verklarte Nacht is one of my favorite pieces ever written.

But maybe I owe early Webern another shot? ;-)

No, not at all. Stay away...., posted on June 15, 2025 at 14:32:49

Just always wonder what you're missing.

. . . it's kind of ironic*, maybe even dark, considering the way the composer died.
