I remember hearing "rumors" about the behavior of certain teachers back in the late 60's and early 70's, but they were dismissed as "Oh - that's just the way they do things in Europe". In addition, pianist Natasha Paremsky once told me that her mother brought her to Italy for a lesson with a VERY famous pianist of the time (not Italian), who, at the end of the lesson, told her that he might be able to "help" her, but also advised her, "But next time, don't bring your mother to the lesson". Needless to say, that was the last lesson she had with that guy.

'shine" is correct for American English, I think.

As a male piano student I experienced a bit of this from a female teacher.
First, when I was about to take a conservatory exam and my (male) teacher saw who was going to examine me, he said, "Don't be surprised if she touches you a bit, and don't let it put you off." She did and I didn't.
Nothing sexual, just quite a few pats and squeezes.

As a university level piano major, I was assigned the same female teacher, and all was kosher. Until one day a guest pianist was showing off in one of the rooms just off the main hall and a small group had gathered around the door to the room where he was playing.
I joined the group on the very outside, with my back to the open hallway, and very soon felt a hand expertly slide between my legs from behind and give me a gentle squeeze in the goolies. I looked over my shoulder and my piano teacher smiled at me.

It was the 1960s, and I considered it par for the course. I had already switched my major and she no longer taught me, so I suppose I was "fair game".

One of Ms. CfL's piano teachers was Robert Helps, who, I believe, got a respected reputation for playing contemporary works. Anyway, she told me that he was very. . . uh. . . physical at the lessons - but not in a sexual way. He would do things like roughly grab her by the shoulders (from the back) and push her toward the keyboard as she was playing. Apparently, there was a method in his madness, and she considered this method legitimate. I forget though what he was trying to accomplish.
