When we were about 14, my friend and I rode the bus from our comfortable suburb down into "the ghetto" to a club where he was playing with his quintet. We were shown to a table in an adjacent room where we could hear but not see and when asked, ordered a Coke. After the set, we were presented with a bill for $5 each (this was 1962) and told the waiter all we had was a little more than bus fare home. The manager came over and, I think, astonished at the two young white boys, comped us.
