Charming Rodrigo from Thibaud Garcia (and a great recording and orchestral support, too).

So much for my promise to avoid the Top 50 stuff, (I was going to explore the Haydn Trios next, but ... next week : )

First, an excellent recording from Erato. Trumpet staccato: right rear, solo cello: just in front of right speaker just to the side of guitarist, piccolo: palpable, strings: able to spread out as much as necessary while taking over the "big theme" in the end of the 2nd mov't, and for once in my experience, not a shred of harshness or "in your face" discomfort.

As for the orchestra support, I can't recall a more interesting and seductive performance than that given by Glassberg and the Toulouse. The woodwinds are charming, from the chirpy piccolo, and chatty Bassoon in the outer mov'ts to the gorgeous oboe d'amor that opens the middle. As mentioned earlier, the strings really sing in the climax of the 2nd. Truly a cathartic moment.

Garcia's guitar projects a piquant sound when needed, warm and rounded otherwise. (Metal and nylon strings coexist. How nice to see in the current dark, us against them, binary world!) The virtuosic passages are very well-balanced when interacting with the orchestral woodwinds; you'll hear new things.

Garcia and Glassberg freshen-up the old war horse in a way that would make Fischer and his Budapestians green with envy: the scrubbed Padron Pepper is served-up with the skin still intact.

Man, are artists getting younger and younger or is it just me?

Otherwise, I'm confused.

Oh man, call Uber and tell them to drop me off an an old-folks' home! I meant Erato, not DGG. , posted on November 15, 2020 at 10:12:14
I guess DGG popped into my head because I was thinking of Milos. : )
