I am considering using a dac which has a headphone only output - the chord mojo. I own a cardas reference ic and would like to keep that and use it with a y adapter. Are there sq differences when using a standard ic with a y adapter vs a y cable? thank you

Adapters et al perform less well than a properly terminated cable. I would send yours back to Cardas for retermination.

An adapter for use with a pair of audiophile-quality rca interconnect cables tends to be a better sounding option vs. a typical y-adapter cable.
