Anyone have or had an Onkyo M-504 amp? Do caps go bad?

My first foray into decent 'mid-end' sounding audio was an Onkyo M-504 amp I purchased new back in the mid 80's. It's the one with the huge, glowing green dual wattmeters on the front. I've used it the last few years not as a main audio system amp, but as an amp to power my video equipment's audio output, such as a S-VHS and DVD player. I have not hooked up a Dolby Surround system, but am happy with DVD stereo for now, since it's hooked up to a pair of classic Polk Audio Monitor 10's from the 80's. It still sounds real good, but am wondering if I should replace the large capacitors inside the unit. I have been told that the large power reserve caps go bad after several years, and need replacement. The amp was bought back in 1986, and kept in a clean, temp controlled environment. But it's still 18 years old, and for some strange reason, it is of 'sentimental value' to me, so I want to 'upkeep' it and leave it in my current setup. Any advice regarding capacitor changes would be appreciated. Thanks. |
