We've just finished building this beauty. The LP is played in a temperature-controlled chamber under vacuum conditions flooded with inert gas (argon 99.95% purity and <0.05% relative humidity). A remote camera provides a visual of the interior for cueing and operation. All parameters are software controlled for ultimate playback fidelity. It takes less than 30 minutes to set up playback, but for the truly discerning, time is not an issue. Requires 575V source.

The Good:
After cleaning the speed adjust pots with contact cleaner, it holds speed accurately.
The Bad:
Cueing (some kinda funky electrical set-up) is not working. Previous owner wrenched tonearm lift out of position to allow unfettered manual operation.
Auto Mode is not working (but Manual is fine.)
I'm thinking this might be the basis for a good project. Strip the turntable out of the cheesy plastic/MDF plinth and mount it in a massive wood plinth. Add a DIY unipivot tonearm. I'm feeling the urge to create something unique.

is this a newer Linn? How did you get the platter to shine like that?
It's actually a late 80's deck that someone painted gloss black. I polished the platter on a high speed cotton buff with commercial compound (previous workplace). Unfortunately, it doesn't stay really shiny for very long. I tried some Mothers aluminum polish, but it's not as good as the old tube of Autosol that I couldn't find.
jeff
Have you applied a coat of wax after polishing-retains the shine for quite a bit longer.
Agree that nothing beats a machine buff, but you might try 'Simichrome' if you don't care for the 'Mother's'.
![]()
"dammit"

Garrard 301 (rebuilt by Classic Hifi) --- the 301 chassis plate is new, was milled from a solid aluminium block so it's a lot stiffer and less resonant than the original. Plinth is a Loricraft clone with adjustable height on the squashball holding corner braces, and also adjustable Isonoe isolating feet to allow levelling. So the deck effectively has two levels of isolation built in.
Schick 12" arm, and that's an Ortofon 90th Anniversary SPU you can see on the end of it.
What I like about this build is the complete lack of visible belts (well it has no belts lol) or wires. And it sounds rather nice too!
In hindsight, it seems only a matter of time before some cnc programmer would decide to reverse engineer the dimensions of the 301 chassis and produce a new one as a cnc mill hog-out.
In the photo the job looks very well done.

WOW, You have been busy with all those TT's. I noticed on the Sapphire you dont have a record clamp or weight. Is that because it dulls the sound to much? I had a Shapphire for awhile and that's what I found........
Hi,
I've picked up a few turntables that I put into storage. The S.O.T.A. is my primary turntable while the bedroom system has a 1200 that gets some use. The V.P.I. has been sitting for a few years neglected. Nothing wrong with it, just not enough room. One of the Thorens is on loan to a friend/neighbor.
I use a ringmat on the S.O.T.A. so a weight is out. I'm considering reconfiguring my main set-up to incorporate the V.P.I. but I'll have to dispose of hundreds of LPs to do that so... So much to do and so little time.

Hi Abe,
A while back you got a Goldpoint switch and were going to do a head-to-head camparo between the Techie and the Clearaudio. Do you still plan to do that? (Or have you done it and snuck it past me?)
-Bob
Well, I did it and the results were mixed.
There are certain characteristics of the Clearaudio that I prefer over the KAB Technics SL1200mkII. But at other times, the SL1200mkII is a great choice.
I like the fact that the Clearaudio setup, with the SAME cartridge (Dyna 17D3) sounds a bit more "alive" with slightly better resolution and detail.
The KAB SL1200mkII is more "mellow" and not as dynamic or resolving but just as enjoyable - and sometimes more desirable depending on what I'm playing.
As I've said before, there's not a huge night and day difference in terms of one table being better than the other. I might give a slight edge to the Clearaudio but not for the price.
The VALUE bang for the buck winner is by a LARGE MARGIN the KAB SL1200mkII which I can easily live with. It's also less tweaky and dainty. It's a rugged and easy to handle table especially with on the fly VTA, quick start / stop at the push of a button, push button 33/45 rpm selection, etc. It's a very convenient and easy to use table that sounds wonderful.
I like the way the Clearaudio looks and sounds. I like the KAB SL1200mkII as my "daily driver". It's just easier to use and tweak.
![]()
Thanks, Abe. Sounds like the majority of comparisons I've done: A matter of preference/taste rather than a clear cut victory by one or the other. I think the vast majority of components are within a stone's throw of one another. Don't think I've ever heard one component blow away another. It's more often a question of one component doing some things well and another doing other things well. THANKS.

Here's my LP12/Armageddon/Ittok. The cartridge is a Lyra Helikon. Hoping to switch to a Naim Aro arm this year.
*Hoping to switch to a Naim Aro arm this year. *
Naim is stopping the production of the ARO.
.
.
but I have not listened to an ARO. You could get into either the Roksan forum or the Naim forum to check it out. I don't know of compatability issues with the LP12, but since both arms are used on XErxes and XErxes x I'm inclined to believe both could work on the linn. Some homework is maybe involved.
Edits: 08/26/10 08/26/10
but I haven't heard a unipivot that is capable as the ARO on the Linn.
I assume that Artemiz is optimised for the Xerxes/TMS etc which are very different sounding from the Sondek.
That said, i'm sure it'll fit with an appropriate arm board.
Anyways, I already have 2.5 AROs so I'm all set. I was just cautioning Fishfood.
Which do you prefer and why?
As for myself, I was slightly disapointed with the Scout. Not that it wasnt a fun table---it does some things good but -I wanted a more refined sound. Anyway after listening to Fretless, Bruckner9, and Ken lyon, I thought I would take a chance on the Xexesx.I'm not disapointed. It definatly separates the instruments and shows them all in an individual light.Expensive thing but it definatly excells.
I lusted after the TMS for a while, but the lack of US support for the Roksan tables scared me a bit to pursue further.
A Sondek is common and a set up assistance and parts are easier to be found than the Roksan tables.
Nothing worse than buying something expensive blind and find out later that it does not work in your rig OR screwing around trying to tune the deck blind.
Sondek is easy because I am familiar with it and know when it's not performing to the optimum.
If I had the same level of knowledge and comfort, I'm certain that I'll be happy with a Roksan, too.
That's ok. Can't afford a new one anyways! I'm sure the replacement is going to be $5K or more.
be sure it hasn't been rewired and depending on the vintage, it might need a fresh earth paint. ( it wears out overtime )

Why the (I assume) slate blocks? Were you getting unwanted vibrations? Did it improve the sound or was it a footfall issue? I'm looking at a friends Raven One next week so just curious.
Fishfood
Those blocks are Audio Tekne Carbon blocks. It helped smooth some of the edges on the top end from the aluminum platform of the Minus K and add a little more physical weight to the assemble to help the Minus K float better. I heard a worthwhile differnece with them under the Raven AC. Never had a problem with footfalls at my place.
Hopefully you will enjoy your friends Raven One. A great table to listen too.

Mike, could you tell me the brand of lamps you use, and if you bought them online, where to order. Those look like exactly what I'm looking for.
Thanks!
"Life without music is a mistake" (Nietzsche)
....from Koncept.
they are wonderful. they are very low mass so won't fall over and harm your tt. they can be adjusted in many directions and only use 10 watts. and don't add any heat. they last 10,000 hours.
the cost is about $195. you choose either black or silver metal finish and either 'warm' light or 'full spectrom' light.
many of my friends have purchased these lamps after seeing mine. in fact; right now i have 2 of these here for a friend from Canada who ordered them from a local lighting outlet here in Seattle.
i purchased 2 of mine on-line.
mikel
It shows those of us on tight budgets can still enjoy vinyl ;-)
Lighting is also important to keep in mind.
i just installed an Equi=tech 10WQ wall panel system to improve my power. it feed 13 Oyaide R-1 duplex outlets and WPC-Z cover plates.my whole system has been supercharged by this addition. each tt has never sounded better.

Mike,
I have a 2.5kW Topaz isolation transformer wired for a balanced AC output that supplies my whole audio system. It's grounded at the incoming water pipe like the rest of my home AC panel.
The system sounded much better with it in place and somewhat strangely to me, the ROK turntable input benefitted the most (IMO).
My initial motivation was to rid myself of audible radio station RF interference but the sound improvements were not subtle either.
Mike
hi Mike,
i have a few friends that have the Topaz isolation transformer and really like it. that was my other consideration, along with the Isolclean wall panel (which, btw, is not UL approved).
you might consider installing a more elaborate dedicated ground strap as a 'not expensive' upgrade to your set-up. it could lower your noise floor even further.
i'm not surprised your tt motor liked isolated power. but your phono stage might be the main reason for your tt sonic improvement as it's noise floor and dynamics likely took a leap. and it has the toughest job in the signal path and is most sensitive to any power grid noise since it's dealing with amplifying such a low level signal.
mikel
which powers the USS Enterprise.

it does have that other-worldly feeling of ultimate power to the look of it.it took 5 guys to horse that 360 pound beast into place last week. i made sure i was no where close when that event occured.

The arm board isn't the stock plastic one, it's a laminated affair with mahogany on the viewing side. The base underneath the plinth isn't stock, but I tried to make it in a way that would complement the appearance of the table while adding a bit of coupled mass.

What is the dice underneath for?
Ha ! Only noticed it after I took the photo. I had just swapped the support for the tt and with a gyro SE you have to align the motor with the hole & park the subchassis on top so it all lines up. A pair of dice help get the motor in the right position - acting as markers for the inner radius of the motor housing.
Someone should make a template for this job !

Vinyl Inmates,
How do you post photos of stereo equipment on VA? I know how to upload 1 picture, but many of you have several great photos in one post.
Are there instructions somewhere within the Audio Asylum website?

Use html tags. Look in the link. It should take you directly to the image tags. copy and paste the proper tag
Then Right click on the image you want to post and go to properties. This should give the url of the image location. Copy and paste the url within the quote marks of the image tag. Use the preview pane to make sure it posts correctly. Edit as needed. Then post it.
You're right Jethro. He's NOT the kind you have to wind up on Sundays.
1. Put photo 1 in Optional Image URL box as if you were posting just one pic.
2. Hit Preview Message button
3. Repeat steps one and two for each photo you wish to add.

I was sorry to hear about your cartridge mishap. Peter is great to help you out. I remember we sent our cartridges up to Peekskill, NY a day or two apart. My Zu/Denon will be back early next week.

I didn't know you could do that with picys. I always find the hard way. Anyway, thanks. I'll try that.

Unsprung brass suspension towers with Stillpoints inside, with spindle bearing draining through extensible footer into sandbox. Sandbox with eight isolating subsections, with sandbox floating on large soft springs on top of maple platform.
Enjoy.
Looks gorgeous.
The thread drive looks like an effective way to deal with belt creep. ng.
The Tomahawk arm is a good looking addition to the T3 Pro.
Nice work. I suspect it sounds 3 times as good as it looks and it looks like a million dollars.
Cheers!

On Trans-Fi Terminator Pro, in addition to a super-light CF/foam sandwich slider, I've been playing with several flat wand constructions including stock alumimum Tomahawk, CF eggshell over foam(a mere 4g), and CF eggshell honeycomb alum. The flat wands allow easy and relatively inexpensive cartridge swaps with transfer between wands of a single uninterrupted wiring harness. Trans-Fi has evolved into a very flexible and great-sounding arm.
Thread drive with tensioning capstans that increase the wrap around the circumference of the drive pulleys is a good compromise between the isolation of a belt and the stability of direct drive. I can push my finger against the platter without hearing a fluctuation in speed. Try that with a VPI belt! Though seldom remarked, a flywheel serves several purposes, including buffering transmission of motor noise.
Dave,
I love the idea of incorporating a damped layered flat arm wand.
Genius!
Even acrylic, metal and cf as a sandwich would probably be better than any ingredient alone.
I cannot wait to hear your final report of these trials. Please post them at the asylum.

Jim,
My hypothesis is that with a very short wand there are only modest differences between various materials and laminates. This is largely acknowledged w/r to hardwoods in above Reed tonearm thread. Apparently with Reed the distinct character of each hardwood is "best" revealed as arm length increases from 9" to 12". One would suppose that such differences on a really short arm like Trans-Fi are minimal. However, there was notable improvement when moving from Trans-Fi's round tube CF wand to his Tomahawk alum flat wand. My guess is that this was mostly due to advantages of the flat profile(or possibly the point bearings as compared to the prior knife pivot bearings.)
Now that the flat profile and point bearings are "preferred", it will be interesting to try more composites and add hardwoods to the mix.

What are you thoughts (pros and cons) on the Panzerholtz material that is used in your Thorens plinth?
I used Baltic Birch ply in the Thorens plinth, and the plinth for the Teres.
The Uwe body on the DL-103R is in Panzerholz. I can comment on it as opposed to using an Ebony body or the stock plastic body.

They both perform pretty well. I've been listening to a number of my CD-R recordings from the SOTA and the recordings sound wonderful. I don't have the SOTA connected yet in my new home.
The Technics is up and running, and it sounds great with the DL-S1 cartridge. I definitely like them both, but the Techincs seems so much simpler with its direct drive platter. I might have to keep them both, though. ;-)

Top priority for any turntable I use is dead accurate speed control, no discernable wow & flutter or rumble, and it must sound EXCELLENT. On all these points, the direct drive models I use excel.
The SP-15 is a natural for spinning 78s, as it's a three speed model. More importantly, it features plus/minus 10% pitch control, which is essential when playing pre-1925 acoustic discs, many of which require playback at speeds other than 78.26 rpm. The digital pitch adjust readout makes dialing in correct speed real easy and fast. The long Jelco tonearm on the SP-15 was chosen to accomodate 16" transcription discs.
The JVC QL-A7 has no unique qualities (other than excellent performance) that make it preferable for MONO playback. It's just a really well built turntable and sounds great so it gets a spot on the bench.
The KAB Technics is a versatile and easy to use turntable loaded with essential features. Seemingly minor things like changing speed from 33 to 45 with the push of a button (as opposed to lifting a platter and moving a belt by hand) and instant start/stop operation make spinning a wide variety of discs a pleasure instead of a chore. So it just seemed a natural for stereo 45/LP playback.
Do you need a MONO cartridge to play MONO LPs? No, not really. Using the MONO button on your amp or phono preamp may be all you need to get improved results from a stereo cartridge. I like the Grado ME+ for both its sound (neutral, clean, and highly detailed) and that it has a 1.0 mil elliptical stylus, a good match for the slightly wider grooves of older mono discs.
