I'm not getting the thick and rich sound of my Dual 1229 from my Lenco L75. I have a Linn LV X tonearm installed. On both, I was using a Grado Prestige Silver cartridge. The Lenco/Linn also seems a tad hard sounding. What I do notice is that the Lenco combo is dancing circles around the Dual in terms of tracking ability and transparency....but I'm not sure it's as musical. For both I was using a Realistic solid state phono stage, which quite frankly sounds better than this Audio Experience Concerto preamp that just arrived. Any comments or tips would be appreciated.

Hi There,
I have exactly the same setup as you, that I made up for a friend (my own setup is LP12/Ittok/Lingo/Grado Prestige Gold). That is: a Lenco L75 with a Linn Basik LV X tonearm, albeit with a Grado Prestige Black (though I used the Gold on it too).
My experience is that this setup is not very revealing, with sound being a bit muffled.
My explanation is as follow:
- The stock Lenco L75 is noisy and the suspension not very effective at suppressing noise.
- The VTA with a Linn arm is too high, as the Linn arm colar is very high. The only solution was to use several layers of turntable mat (1 rubber mat in sandwich between 2 felt mat, not really ideal).
Solution:
Find a L75/S, with S-shaped tonearm and suspended inner chassis. This sounds miles better than the original L75, mostly because of the inner suspension which isolates a lot better from vibration (plus the tonearm and platter vibrate together, like in a LP12). The S-shaped tonearm of the 75/S is also a lot better than the original L75 tonearm. You would eliminate the need for an additional tonearm this way. If you were to change tonearm anyway, try other tonearms that Linn ones, as VTA will always be a problem because of the collar height.
Hope this helps,
Maxime
I have a Dual 1219, impressive idler wheel drive TT, in stock form better than a Lenco. A rebuilt Lenco in a massive plinth with a decent arm will beat the Dual though. My rebuilt L75 has a Decca International unipivot in the original arm hole. Paired with a Shure M97 the sound is certainly not lean. My other arm is a Rega RB300 attached firmly to the plinth with a Denon DL103. This combo generates the kind of bass you can build a house upon!
So maybe your settings? Pivot to spindle distance, VTA, VTF. The condition of your Linn arm, arm bearings? Cables? Phono preamp?

My LXV sounds bright, too.
The seller of the LV X arm says he'll swap me for a Basik Plus. I wonder if that arm sounds any better? Which cartridge and table are you using?
With your system make up, less revealing arm might be a better option. My very low spec LP12 ( Basik/Basik/20XH ) sounded far more musical, albeit less resolution than a Basik/Ittok/20XH.
It was a low-fi set up, but I much preferred it than having to liven with a half-way hifi.A mellow sounding Dyna 20XH did not cure the problem with the Ittok either.
It lasted less than a month.I found both Ekos and Ittok sound a tad mechanical.
I suppose there are several band-aid cures, but for me, changing arm was the easiest thing to stop the high frequency congestions.
I'm not sure what you're saying. Are you saying that "probably" the Basik Plus is better than the LV X? If so, it what way? Please clarify....
A Basik Plus is not a better arm than an Ittok, but within a certain system context, it can work to the advantage.
Transparency is a good thing, but I sure don't want it if it only makes me listen to what's wrong in the rest of my system.
I can only share my Ittok experience with the cartridge/phonostage and deck I used tho.
I know nothing of Grado Silver. Is it even a good match with the arm?
And you know for sure the Ittok's bearing is in a good health?
I don't have an Ittok. I have the LV X.
.
It sits in a box, and it most likely will stay there. It was on my LP12 when I bought it, but I changed it out after a few hours in favor of a Magnepan. Now, the LP12 is in a closet someplace with that Magnepan still on it. It seems like I have the frontend covered. What I need are new amps! (maybe if I sold some turntables)
I had a Linn Axis with Basik Plus and K9 many many years ago. Though probably more detailed sounding in some areas, the combo sounded thin compared to the Rega Planar3/RB300/K9 it replaced. Most records sounded thinner than CDs played through an average CD player of the time. I wasn't impressed. Eventually I upgraded to an Akito before the combo sounded right. I haven't heard the LVX but it's very similar to a Basik Plus. I suggest a higher class tonearm if you want real improvement.

I have a LVX Basik Plus, K9 on old Linn LP 12. Not bright. Just kind of aged and vintage sounding.
I haven't mounted my new (1.5 years old in box, sealed) V15VxMR for that exact reason. Hoping to get the most out of my K9 first.
Are you feeling like the transparency is false, like cd's? Isn't this a new combo and you just are getting used to it's sound?
I have owned a Dual 1019 and now a custom Lenco L75. IMHO, the Lenco is NOT lean or hard sounding. Rather it is glorious, stupendous, and mesmerizing!
Try lowering your VTA. If VTA is too high then high frequencies will be emphasized. Are you sure when you mounted the Linn arm such that your spindle to pivot distance is 211 mm? I'm not sure this would cause the problem but it is a variable since you are not using the Lenco arm. (BTW I use an Alphason arm which has the same mounting distance as the Linn.)

My VTA is fine. I checked that. Pivot to spindle distance is fine as well due to the fact that the Linn arm is a direct plug in. Did you have to modify the hole for the Alphason arm? Also, was VTA a problem due to the increased height of the Alphason sleeve? Which model arm are you using?
I have an Alphason Opal but they all have the same mounting distance. The Lenco arm hole was larger than the Opal sleeve so I had to be careful with alignment. VTA needed to be redone with the new arm and collar.
