My latest aquisition - the TD 524, actually a EMT 938 in disguise.
Shown with TP 16 L with TP 64, Isolator (made by a friend) and Denon DL 103 vdH.

Hi HolgerVery nice table
I have one that was built into a custom plinth for the South African broadcasting corp. My model has a built in pre-amp with controls for Cue and Transmission. Also seperate balanced channel outputs for cue and transmit. Special markers were applied to the table to show the DJ how far the record would travel before it reached speed. The pre-amp would mute transmission sound until the table reached the selected speed. This would allow the DJ to almost pause his record. The spin-up time for 33 is under 300ms. The stop button would apply a servo operated brake to the platter to keep the record in position.
The sheer bulk of the thing is impressive. Mine weighs in at 35kg (+- 70 pounds)
My table is fitted with a modified armboard to take the SME 3009 MKII arm. The SABC used Audio Technica carts during this period so I fitted an AT 440MLa. The combination works well.
I hope you enjoy your table as much as I am enjoying mine.
Please excuse me if I am going on a bit, but I have only had mine about a month and it has not stopped playing.
as the TD150 underneath !
Very nice DD.... Does it also have a built-in riaa eq preamp? What material was used for the plinth? Thanks.
No, there are just cinch output terminals in my case, but there were versions with integrated preamps available on special order afaik.
The plinth is made from wood, the whole tt is quite heavy - about 22kg.
Cheers, Holger
Thanks Holger,Wood (or HDF wood-veneered?) is a nice touch for SAF vs. battleship grey, but with pro broadcast quality performance 'underneath'.
I've often wondered about this one. Also the TD535 which came later.I suppose with that TP16 it's not fair to compare the sound against any of your TD124s with the SME tonearms and more upscale cartridges, but it would be interesting to see how the Thorens DD compares against their earlier idler drive model.

That is a normal TP 16 tonearm? With a different end/headshell on it? How is that done? Is it sleeved?
It's the TP 16 L. This ia a longer and heavier version of the standard TP 16 Mk. III. The arm wand ist not the TP 63 but the heavier TP 64 with slots for mounting the cartridge with standard screws and nuts.
The effective mass of this special TP 16 should be around 13 to 14 grams.
Cheers, Holger
Thanks very much for the info. I don't think we see those arms on this side of the Atlantic. That is a beautiful professional table. Thanks for posting it.
Very nice looking table, the most substantial looking Thorens I've seen post the 124 series....How's the suspension set up, ie, what's sprung and what's not ?
& how did they decide on doing a Thorens-version Emt 938 ?
Last, was this a consumer item or a studio/radio table ? Thanks,
I'll take that off your hands if you don't need it :)There is a manual at the Vinyl Engine site. Thoren's claims it's a semi automatic Direct Drive turntable for professional DJ use. Remote controlled! Has some kind of 9 pin serial connection for remote interface also.
