The 205 you show above is a moving magnet pickup. I know I owned it after a friend saw a review with a frequency response and 1 khz square wave and said he had to own it. We bought them and they were exactly like he expected and the second best moving magnet and one of the best pickups I ever heard. The only better moving magnet was the EPC 100 MK 4 which we also bought. It was a significantly improved version of the 205 with half the output(1.0 mv) and bandwidth beyond 100 khz, but only available in the USA in the upmarket version of the SL 10, the SL15. And yes it was a magic pickup. But my styli have collapsed and no replacements are available.

I still have my SL-7 stashed away in the cupboard. I have always used moving magnet carts with it. I never use it anymore but I can't seem to part with it. It's a very compact and heavy table with nice squishy feet. Are these tables worth anything anymore?
Can I still get a P mount cartridge for it?
Sorry to hijack your thread. Thanks for the memories!

I just got excited seeing the SL-10 and wondered if p moutnts were still available. When I get some free time I'm gonna hook up the old 7 and go down memory lane.Maybe this fall.

This turntable was designed to work ONLY with low output Moving Coil P-Mount cartridges. The best of the breed being Technics' own 205C MkIII and the 310MC.
The reason this is so is because the SL-10 has an MC headamp built into the turntable!Cheers,

by a button on the back so any p-mout cart can be used.
FWIW, my SL10, with the 310mc, had a kind of 'homogenizing' imprint on the sound of records, making them all sound kinda the same, as if all were recorded and mastered in the same studio by the same crew. I didn't recognize this until I upgraded to a better table, arm and cart (Sota, MMT, Grace F9E). NOT a neutral vinyl front end.

IMHO there are so many potential evils:P Mount Cartridge
Built-in Head amp of unknown quality
Direct Drive.
Motorized SLT tonearmThe previous line of phono cartridges that Technics had that shared the 1 basic body for both MC and MM, were truly stellar performers.
The later "P-Mounts" are an uinknown quantity, however.
At least, to me.cheers,

is the 205 the better cartridge

Apparently there must be a switch to change output levels on the turntable because the 205 is a high output moving magnet cartridge. The 310MC is a low output moving coil.I mistook the 205 for the 305. The 305 is ultra low in output .1mv
In the case of the 205. I consider this one of the 3 or 4 best cartridges I have heard in my system. It is also probably the best cartridge for rock there is!
The 310, however, is a mystery to me. I have yet to hear one. Anecdotally I have read comments by the Technics fanatics that it sounds great, but I would rather reserve that kind of comment until I hear it for myself. One thing is for certain, Technics made a few spectaular cartridges in the 80's and 90's.
