A budget table like the Rega P3 has the RB300 tonearm, and this arm is capable of supporting some very fine cartridges. You could easily justify putting a Benz Glider ($800) or the wood-body series (L2, M2, H2 -- $1200) on the P3.

Follow Ups:
The P3 is a fine entry-level deck, but it has serious limitation in comparisons with more sophisticated decks. For starters:1) Its motor is powered directly from the mains, so that any noise and frequency variations are expressed immediately in the rotational speed of the platter.
2) The P3 has a relatively undamped glass platter with a felt mat on top. The resonant signature of the glass is quite audible.
Why not buy a higher-quality deck with an RB300 and decent cartridge on it and then upgrade the latter two later? That's what I did fifteen years ago - I still have the turntable, but each upgrade of cartridge and tonearm was well worthwhile.

Switching away from glass to acrylic sucks the life out of the music.Keep the glass platter.
" Switching away from glass to acrylic sucks the life out of the music."That's been my experience as well. I had a chance to A/B the stock glass P3 platter and a plastic one. The latter had a few superfluous sonic gains over the glass platter---slightly deeper, but also fatter (bloated) bass, and slightly better imaging---but the music sounded lethargic and lackluster.
I've only heard one TT with a plastic platter that didn't sound more or less lifeless; the Roksan Radius, and that's due to intelligent implementation of this cheap material rather than the usual practice of simply sawing off bigger, heavier logs of the stuff as you move "up" the designer's product line.
IME, the bigger and heavier the acrylic platter, the more laid-back, ponderous, and uninteresting the music becomes, in spite of occasional gains in audiophool sound effects.

Hmm. I switched from a Rega to a deck with an acrylic platter and all of a sudden there was far more of everything, particularly life! I think there are acrylic platters and acrylic platters - as always, the secret is in the execution. In my experience felt mats, whether over felt or glass, remove too much of the texture and presence from the recording for my tastes.
