I use a Goldring Elektra MM right now and was wondering what you all felt would be a significant step up from this, yet still fall under $400. FWIW, it's a MMF 2.1 table which does not like MC's. I was looking at the higher tiered Goldring MM's like the 1042, as I like the basic sound on the Elektra, save for a slightly wispy and peaky brightness in the 6-8kHz range emhasizing the ssssssss silibance. Any thoughts on a step up?

I sell Clearaudio, DV, etc. The 10x5 is your BEST bet under $400.00!...remove the cover, yes.

Thanks all for the recommendations. The MMF 2.1 does not like MC's due to its steel (alloy) platter and unshielded motor--especially Grado's and Denons. Even Music Hall themselves told me to steer clear of anything but MM's for this particular deck.

I think all of the recommendations thus far are good. You might also consider the Grado Gold, a tremendous bargain at $180 (List, but available for less.) or the same company's wood body Platinum for $300. These cartridges do everything well, but have the most glorious mid-range going.

This is a high-output MC.You said that your table doesn't like MC, but perhaps you were referring to "low output" MC. I bet that your table would love this cart.
The Dynavector 10x5 is *easily* the best cart I have ever heard for under $400. I think output is around 2.5 mV.
Note: to get it to full potential, you need to have the red platic body removed (called "denuding").
I totally agreed with your assessment of this fine cartridge. It still amazes me each time I play my LPs.

...An 80's vintage Audio Technica 15Sa on a MMF 2.1 that was loaned to me.It worked really well on that arm, badly outclassing the Shure M97xE that it came to me with.
The cartridge was a freebie but the stylus cost me $80.
The 15Sa was very close to top of the line in it's day...

than the Ortofon 540MKII. Great Gyger stylus and sound. I think it is a better value at $230 (see link) than the $350+ Goldring 1042.

I just replaced a much loved Benz Micro Ace with an Ortofon 540 MkII last week on Henry's advice. I have about 60 hours on it and I can say that it doesn't give much up to the Ace except maybe a little air and sparkle on the top end. It has very good low end and does PRAT very well. It is an excellent Rock and Roll cart.I think it is quite a good buy at $230.00.
Cheers,
Jim
Just curious how you think it compares to the OM line? I've always wondered why Ortofon have two lines of MM's.
The 540MKII easily betters my Ortofon 320U, which uses the same fine line stylus as the OM-30.

I agree. Find a top-notch cartridge from yesteryear, and if you feel the need, replace the stylus assembly.
