Had one of those can't believe my eyes moments on ebay last night...Got home from a local bar after 3 margaritas and watching the Red Sox lose. (Wife was the DD) Do one last check of my most common eBay searches before hitting the hay...there is a Thorens TD-124 for $250 buy it now. I blink...once, twice, three times. It's still there.
I skim the description...something about running at 31 rpm. I assume I can get to the bottom of that, and I pulled the trigger!
So, after all my years of reading about how good these tables are, I will finally own one! I have owned the little niece of the TD-124...the TD-111, and I was impressed. I have since sold that...but now I own the REAL deal...one of the most revered idlers out there.
I am pumped!
Dave
Follow Ups:
I've been thinking about jumping in the idler pool myself, so I can't wait to hear what you find out.

Well, it's been nice knowing you, Dave. Hope you don't go completely to the idler side and abandon us fans of bouncy tables!

Not a chance...
hi, dave,congratulations!!!
i had almost the same experience except i didn't grab the best price as you did. but i sure love this thing.
This table is going to awaken your vinyl passion and lead you to rethink everything you thought you knew about turntables. The Thorens is a definite keeper....
... and I'd be glad to be of help. I am hardly an expert but I restored an mkI and a mkII to great running conditions and learned a lot in the process.Congrats on a great buy!

I appreciate the offer, and will most likely take you up on it.
Congratulations, I rebuilt one of these into a heavy CLD plinth and it sounds terrific, can easily hold its head up with high-end beasties!

The idler is not directly driven by the motor pulley, but via a short belt. Or am I mistaken (not the first time).

Yeah, but it's the idler that comes into contact with the platter...where the pedal meets the metal...so to speak. It's certainly not a suspended subchassis design, though.
Well, I'll stick with a pure idler design, at least I will when Fred J finishes my Bogen/SME III.

advantages over a "pure idler design" as you call "them".
I saw that one too with great amazement and almost "pulled the trigger" myself but I already have four 124's plus other tables. I'm happy that it didn't go to someone that saw a fast buck to be made instead of to someone that wants it for what it is and will use it. Hopefully the speed problem is something simple like lack of or incorrect oil in the bearing well. Does sound heat related doesn't it?

Nice pick-up Dave.I would have done the same thing if I hadn't been asleep.
..and you should be just the guy to figure out whatever issues are plaguing it. $250 for a TD-124! I watched for months and then finally gave in and paid the ridiculous prices. Do you know what you are going to do for a plinth and arm? Have fun.

I've got an SME 3009 I could use, or possibly a Grace 707 I have on the way.I'll use the stock plinth for starters, and then start exploring making my own heavyweight plinth or having a carpenter friend do it for me.
I just heard from the seller, he never tried cleaning the motor...that is probably where I will start.
You have two good TAs to try. I'd like to try a Grace 714 (as I remember correctly). It's the wooden one. Supposed to be a good arm and it looks cool too - double whammy!
If he never tried cleaning the motor then it's a good bet that's it...and not too hard to take care of either.
I've got an ESL tonearm on my TD124 MKII. I haven't done anything with it yet as I'm still finishing another project. I've got enough projects to last me through the next century. I won't last that long but the projects will. :)
