I uncovered the Aurum Beta S myth a few months ago. Here are the links.

on my K9. Your post is the dark grey one. Do you know if any differences?

I don't know about the yellow one, but the grey one is older by a number of years. The tip on it is nude mounted, and it is of Audio-Technica's upline variety. The tip looks the same as standard issue on a Grace F9E, so it may have been sourced from the same maker. All in all, my K9 is a superb tracker, but I don't really prefer the sound of it because it is a bit edgy for my particular tastes. It leads me to believe that not all K9s are created equal. Some may, or may not, be more refined than others. They may not even sound the same. That said, mine is the only one I can speak about because I have never been exposed to any of the others.

I still see the dark grey one NOS occasionally on ebay.As do many Linn owners with the basic 80's setup, I have a yellow one; my brother's AR ES-1 was fitted with one in the late 80's and used sparingly until I started to use mine in 2005.
I am considering an upgrade, either with my old Shure V15III, trying to get a NOS stylus (have a conical and HE but used, esp. HE). I don't have a VN35MR but consider the Japanese stylus or Ed Saunders.
I have a new V15VxMR. Should I just go there first? Ran that through Brooks Berdan, who suggested a Grado in light of my system (check inmate systems), but he always says that. He likes Sumiko's, and I heard both the EVO III and Blackbird in my friend's system. More etched not as warm, but both are very good matches for my friend's setup (Rega P3 into Jolida into Vandersteen 2Ce sig plus REL).
Although I looked into Clearaudio and so on, it sounds like I should forget it, right?

You might try removing the stylus assembly, and re-seating it. That works on a good many Audio-Technica models, if they are tweaked to one side, and not actually bent.
