Budget up to $600. My phono pre will drive anything.

Follow Ups:
...to the headshell, the Dynavector 17D Karat is a great match for the JMW-9. It's the best cartridge I've owned, and you might be able to find one for about $600.The only problem I've had, is a very loud 'pop' when turning off the the motor of my Scout, a problem that apparently be remedied with a simple capacitor replacement. I'm uncertain as to whether the 'pop' is a cart issue, or a phono stage issue.
The Karat is also recommended by HW, the big cheese at VPI.
I sure love that match, but the Karat does sort of scream, "Try me!", doesn't it?I asked Mike Pranka about it and he felt that if I loved the 20XL that I should probably stick with it...but what audiphool ever listened to an expert! The hobby is all about experimentation!
If I had more money, I'd soon be broke...but I'd have more LP's!

...but the only unit the dealer had in stock had a skewed cantilever. He offered me the Karat at a great price (about $600) and I jumped on it. I have a feeling that my phono stage, a Pro-Ject Tube Box, might not be the best match, but the Karat was still one of the biggest improvements I've made to my system.
I have had the JMW-9 tonearm for well over twelve months now, fitted with numerous cartridges and highly recommend before you consider purchasing any other cartridge, please read VPI's “biblical” comments included in the below forum post link. Thanks orpheus!
My suggestions in order of preference, for the best matching cartridges to suit specifically the JMW-9 tonearm, against your stated budget of around $600, are as follows:
1. Sumiko Blackbird 2.5 mV HOMC cartridge
2. Dynavector DV 20-XL 0.3 mV LOMC cartridge
3. Dynavector VPI Special DV 20-XM 1.0 mV MOMC cartridge
2. Dynavector DV 20-XH 2.8 mV HOMC cartridge
3. Clearaudio Aurum Beta S MkII S/S 3.6 mV MM cartridgeRemember, the VPI 3 gram s/s additional headshell mass is still needed for the JMW-9 tonearm fitted with the majority of cartridges stated above, in order to achieve the best possible resonant frequency results.

Merle I've had my Scout for over 3 years and have tried many carts.I would stay away from headshell weights to compensate for light cartridges.I've done the math and the best sub $600 cart for the JWM 9 arm is in my humble opinion the Benz Micro Ace.I have one on my JWM 9 Sig now and it tracks and sounds great. It weighs 8.3 grams with a 15cmd for an ideal match of approx 10.5 resonant frequency.I'm gonna try the VPI Dynavector next myself. The trick with the JWM 9 is to stay with a cart of at least 8 grams and 12cmd,15cmd better still.I read one of your earlier post and if no one else has offered I'd be happy to walk you through mounting and setting up your cart for optimum performance.Good Luck,
Hi Bob, I bought a Dynavector 20H on Audiogon yesterday. I should have it in a week or so. I've been fooling around with VTA settings and I think I have it about right. What I found was after I got the VTA to where I thought it was best, my tracking force was out of whack. I re-set the tracking force last night and the table was sounding really good. When I get home this evening, I intend to check the tracking force and see if it's still where it should be. If it is, I intend to leave everything as is until the Dynavector shows up, at which point I'll mount that one and try to get everything dialed in correctly.

A cartridge weight is still recommended for the ACE. If you look at the ACE literature that came with the cartridge, the manufacturer recommmends a higher effective mass arm than the JMW-9.

I know it's all about synergy and set-up, but I listened to three different VPI's with Blackbirds on them (2 Scouts and 1 'master) before pulling the trigger on mine, and each of them were bested by the DV-20. Yes, even the "lowly" DV-20XH.No need to ask which one I chose..

I replaced a Dyna 20XL with a Blackbird and to me the Blackbird sounded better, more dynamic, better bass, quieter in the groove. The Blackbird was recommended to me by Mike at VPI as an upgrade for the 20XL. Great recommendation IMHO.

Merle,
Other than the "usual suspects," i.e. Denon DL-103/103R, AT-OC9ML/II, etc., you might consider the Sumiko Blackbird or Denon DL-S1, although they are just a bit above your $600 limit. The link is to the Denon.
