My VPI Aries' 300 rpm motor has not yet been lubricatred since I got it.Is lubrication needed? If so what oil can be used? Is WD40 ok? Can I just let drops of oil flow down from the shaft?

Follow Ups:
VPI recommends white lithium grease for platter bearing and 40 weight motor oil for motor. Please take a look at the following link for more details.
Contrary to the posts below, (which seem to be about Vpi Scout tables, if there's a difference there), the whole time I used a Vpi Aries table they (vpi) recommended a high-quality oil , not a grease of any kind.Things may have changed-- vpi was never reluctant about new approaches-- but thru about ten yrs, and both generations of motor for the Aries, it was oil, never grease.
Before using something perhaps unintended, I'd do an archives check here, have a look at the Vpi website, and maybe call Mike at Vpi before actually deciding on grease.
My memory is that they recommend '40 wt' oil, couple of drops on the motordrive shaft just below the pulley, turn by hand for a while before powering up to distribute the lubricant evently.
good luck,
JD.
You'll find over a period of six months or so, grit, dust and dried up grease/oil residue will start to accumulate between the bottom of the motor's shaft and its exposed bearing surface.I clean this area thoroughly using cotton tips and isopropyl alcohol prior to re-lubing this shaft bearing assembly region.
For lubrication, I simply use white lithium grease, as recommended by VPI for use on all new turntable motors.
With a toothpick, I dab a small amount around the motor's exposed bottom shaft region and mating bearing surface. The grease will gradually slide down inside the internal shaft bearing assembly over time, since its viscosity will reduce as the motor warms up (via continual spinning) and due to natural gravity forcing it in that direction.
I use the following white lithium grease with my VPI Scout motor:

...VPI actually recommends grease? Wouldn't grease plug up the pores of the sintered bronze bushing(s)? I've never heard of using grease for such an application. You might want to call an engineer at Hurst. That's the source VPI uses for its AC motors.

I have the spray can white lithium by WD40, but I don't really trust anything that comes out of a can that is not baked beans or spaget.
I got VPI to send me a over a small container when I bought the ball suspension for the HRX.
I purchased the Weldtite 40 gram white lithium grease tube from my local bicycle store listed in the below website link:By the way, I have no affiliations with the store mentioned.
In fact, you can even source the highly recommended Finish Line brand white grease in tube format, from most local larger bicycle stores in the Sydney metro region.
About phono stages, let's just say tubes and SUTs are the going to be implemented together very shortly (wink!).
