By longitudinal I mean tangential to the groove at the stylus, lateral and vertical are at 90 degrees to this and to each other. There is no need to stick to this frame of reference but it makes life easier if you do.

I think the laminates idea has merit. I am basically investigating doing more or less that with slices of cherry and / or various eucalypts but as I lack access to the high pressure laminator I am going to do it the way I do my carbon fibre structures (which are mostly laminates), vacuum bagging epoxy.
