With a thousand dollar budget, I would recommend the following:

$500 - Rega P2 Turntable and RB250 arm
$150 - Rega Super Bias cartridge
$300 - Rega Fono MM

$950 = Total. The Rega gear are outstanding mates for one another. Beyond pace (which is what is usually mentioned), I've always felt this combination has outstanding cohesiveness, sweetness and warmth.
