I recently installed a Sumiko Amethyst MM cartridge on my ET-2 arm, it only has 25 hours on it but wow, this MM cartridge sound more like an MC cart. Reminds me of my Shelter 901 cartridge with how its sounds.
At first it sound a little thin on the upper and slightly bass shy bit as the hours started to go up so did the sound quality. The Amethyst has a musical presentation and very low groove noise. The soundstage is wide and deep. I have tried it with my EAR 834P clone and SPL Phonos and sounds wonderful with both.
The only draw back I can see with Amethyst is it's lower output level for a MM at 2.5mV, other than that... it has been a very big surprise and has made me forget my other high end cartridges. I liked it so much I just ordered another one last week since they are on sale.
I highly recommend this cartridge.

Your description sounds enticing :)
Cougar - I think you are hearing the good match of a 2mV cartridge to the SPL Phonos. I use a Phonos. I find that I get better sound out of 4mV and higher cartridges by switching to the -10 cut and increasing the volume setting. My 2mV MC cartridge is an Ortofon X-5, retip and ruby cantilever by Andy Kim.
with the EAR 834P clone as well. I still have the Phono at 47K loading and Normal gain output.
