I'm on third the 3rd XX2 on my Roksan TT and the 20XL has been performing back up duties for me since retiring my second system. Over the years I've read people comment that they prefer the 20xl to the XX2 so for sure the XX2 is not always a better choice. Later last year I put the 20xl on and traded in my old XX2 with the distributor. The 20xl stayed in the system for more than 4 months before I put the new XX2 back into the system - the XX2 came quickly I just wanted to spend some time with the 20xl. A few months down the road the XX2, all fresh and broken in, is IMO a significant upgrade to the 20xl. For me the 20xl is an excellent cartridge but XX2 is magical. I'm getting lots of hours on these carts, the last XX2 well over 1000, before I noticed a performance drop which is why I did the exchange for a new one.

'Magical' is pretty hard to argue with. Just something about spending over 1k for a cartridge without hearing it still holds me back, although I've spent easily triple that amount trying many other less expensive and used cartridges over the last decade, including a couple retips. Sold a couple of them and have a few more to go.
It's always nice having trusted dealers or mentors who own/sell gear that you own and have travelled the path before you. I pretty much just followed the footsteps of others getting into the system I have today. The XX2 was pretty much a no-brainer for me. I literally feel sorry for folks who seem to be trying to figure it out by reading magazines or asking group questions in on-line forums. Great connections can be made on-line though.

Every cartridge I had or have now, minus maybe my Grado Ref Ref, Sonata and my Ortofon OM30, were recommendations from AA members. Some were said to be GREAT and others, now looking back, were more like flavor of the day. The Dyna beats them all handily. Still have a soft spot for my Grado, 681, and Denon 109/103D so those will hang around I guess. Embarrassing how many I have when I think about it :-( All but two are currently mounted to headshells.
I thought we were talking about going from the 20XL to the XX2. I'm trying to clarify just because it worked magic for me it might not be the right thing for you. Ie. I'm not trying to suggest you will get the same results as me. For that kind of encouragement you'll need someone with a more similar system than mine.
I really like the 20XL and could live with it long term and probably would have never spent as much on a cartridge (as the XX2) without knowing people who had done nearly the exactly the same thing with the same or a very similar system before me.
There are plenty of on-line comments of folks who prefer the 20xl over the XX2 - I'm just not one of them. I liked the old Grado Signature 8 back in the old days and had a couple of Dynavector hi-outputs. Had over a dozen others affordable cartridges - some we ok some were crappy. The only one that played up as my system evolved was a ClearAudio something I think cost me $200 or so - the others I tried to take with me became a low pole pretty quickly.
Shame for me buying so many $100-$500 cartridges when I could have gotten one biggy. I do still like the sound of my 681EEEmk3 now that I got rid of it's sibilance. Has a full and old school vinyl vibe to it. I had wanted to try a Clearaudio also.
Wasn't that 681EEE discontinued in the early 90s?
I actually don't know, I think I purchased mine maybe 10+ yrs ago new. Had SSSSSibilance right off the bat. Remounted it a couple times and then it sat on its headshell for quite a while. Tried it again later and the sibilance is much much better. I was upset in the beginning because I saw the potential in it, it's really dynamic. I wonder if the 'better' version was discontinued? Someone told me I likely don't have the good version with the stereohedron stylus. Not that I can really check that.
I read about it for years. Something about the reviews very much appealed to me and thought it would be the first nice cartridge I'd buy. By the time I could afford one in the early 2000s it had been out of production for years - but apparently new ones were still available. At least that's how I remember it.
