I was out at the record store yesterday looking for the HvK/VPO on London (or Decca, either). Didn't find either the Dvorak 8th Symphony or The Planets but did see the HvK/VPO Also Sprach Zarathustra and realized I already had it.
And it's a great performance.
But that's how I found the Mozart DG, also Haitink/Bruckner 7th on Phillips, albeit Italian pressings.
London (or Decca, either) has long been my go-to label for classical music. BTW, look for a "G" at the end of the matrix code in the runout. The "G" denotes that the LP was mastered by Ted Burkett, Decca's mastering ace.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
Follow Ups:
Some Italian pressings are excellent. My copies of DGG Mendelssohn's Italian and Reformation Symphonies are great.
...it sounds fine. Regular Dutch Philips aren't all that great to begin with. Not bad, but not in the same league with Decca.

It depends. I have some great Philips recordings. Actually quite a few. Here's one. If you like Rossini sonatas, these are great. They're reissued again (ED) but expensive and on a different label. I don't know how expensive the older lps are.
Like any other Philips.
And don't get me wrong--it's not that I think Philips is crap sounding. They're good, just not at the level of Decca/London.

Certainly You're right. Decca outshined almost everyone in those days. But Philips did make some wonderful sounding records, especially the chamber recordings. And their records of Haitink and the concertgebouw especially Debussy and Ravel were great.
Here's something from Better Records on Philips. I certainly don't agree with Tom Port's bashing of almost all reissues but he does occasionally make a good point.
I forgot to mention Claudio Arrau's recordings of Chopin on Philips. Wonderful and silent!
It is very good indeed.

No, I have the complete set of his Chopin recordings. The concertos are probably great as well. There's also a box with his nocturnes.

...I'm sure the price wouldn't be anywhere near $95. Probably more in the $30 range.
Another label I really like besides London is Chandos. Released a lot of outside the standard repertoire work.

Yes, Chandos can be great. I just got this disc for $95! It was the cheapest around. Very few copies available. Beautiful recording with subterranean bass. A thin pressing and not the best vinyl but a winner sound wise nevertheless.
Had I seen this, I probably would have tried this first.
Some of it pressed by Lyrita. An underrated label.
Not much demand for classical music anymore, which is fine with me. Local store still has most of its classical inventory priced at $3-$4 per LP.

Sort of sad that Classical has taken such a backseat. So much great music out there. Looks like the present generation will pretty much confine it to the scrap heap!
Yes. But look how many people don't think twice about buying a UHQR or One Step. And this is twice the music and if you ask me, better than many of those releases.
