Cantilever material and tip profiles pretty much reached maturity by the early 80's. Modern glues & modern magnet materials can increase power handling and computer modelling can fast track project times. But really a phono cartridge is ultimately a handmade device, and it would appear to me the better things are constructed or maintained by end users will have more of a determining factor on sound quality than using the latest neodymium. The Decca cartridge still considered the closest thing to direct to disk by many, but given the questionable QC makes the difference a choice betweeen pleasure and pain. Enjoy what you have and maintain it so it grows old with you like your record collection.

But other than that, you're right. When it comes to cartridges with user-replaceable styli though, I usually advise people to get something new. If you fall in love with the cart, the stylus wears out, you can replace it with a new OE stylus and it'll sound the same as it did when you first fell for it. If you have to rely on retipping or third-party aftermarket styli, the cart you love probably isn't going to sound the same as it did. Might be better, might be worse, but it definitely won't be the same.
BTW, your Denon--a guy who used to post here a lot had a DL-103D retipped by Van den Hul. He made me some CD rips using that cartridge. Best cartridge I ever heard. Hands down.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.

He ripped several LPs for me using that cart. IIRC he later had it retipped by somebody other than VdH, ripped a couple more for me, but I preferred the cartridge with the VdH tip.
