Just like any music, generally turns off critics.
Follow Ups:
I don't think I ever heard it until I picked up the LP, and I used to spend hours listening to the local classical station.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
Not knocking it. Just heard it on Sirius about 6 days ago (I think it was Perlman, YoYo MA and Barenboim), and my local NPR plays it a bit. It's one of those pieces that can attract multiple stars since it's a triple Concerto...and multiple stars attract audiences...and critics shudder.
On another note, just listened to one of my Christmas presents...the Bluenote reissue of Joe Henderson, Inner Urge, with McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones. Kind of a Henderson does Coltrane. Recommended.
Kevin Gray is kicking ass on those. I've got Inner Urge , one of my favorites.
Speaking of Tyner, the TP Expansions was another impulse (not Impulse!) buy on my part, and it's terrific.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
