Haven't seen anyone do this and it's worked for me through many carts.
1. Do not attach wires to cart. Keep its stylus guard in place,
2. Mount cart as far forward in the mounting slots as possible (finger-tight on the mounting bolts).
3. Now attach the cart wires to the cart -- there will be plenty of room to operate.
4. Slightly unscrew the bolts holding cart to headshell.
5. Slide the cart in the slots to its optimum (final) position and re-tighten the bolts.
6. Remove stylus guard.
That's all there is to it. No dangling carts. No danger to stylus. No having to deal with too little space between the back of the cart and the 4 wires attached to it.
Follow Ups:
I attach the wires first....much easier
... and couldn't disagree more.
Absolutely.. Not... what Granpappy used !!
But he's Long Dead and We are well into the 21st century.
When Fremer says "Don't use it!" do you Sharpie over it in fright?
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
XX2 is going back for a rebuild/trade in and am using a 20xl as backup.I only loosely tighten one screw then turn the cart sideways and mount wires from that position. The pins in back first then the pins in front. Straighten the cart out, tighten both screws lightly. Then align cart with protractor (sure wish I could find mine) before tightening them up.
Easy-peasy.

...the real easiest way to mount a cart is have somebody else do it for you.
Funny you should bring this up since I was messing around with cartridges over the last couple days. Dug out the AR XA and put it back into service as TT/2. Put the mono AT cart in 'er.
The old AR head shell looks clunky and it only works with the old AR arm, but mounting a cartridge is easier than falling out of bed.
So right now, I've got the mono AT cart in one head shell and my backup AT VM540ML in the other. Since the carts both use the VM500-series body and the styli are interchangeable, it's half a minute to switch from mono to stereo and back. No need to reset the VTF.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
