I have had this for over a month now, its still not fully broke in but since the Transcendent Sound Masterpiece preamp is I thought I would give some LP's a spin. All I can say that this SPL Phono preamp is really really nice and matches well with my system's front end. Even though the SPL only has about maybe 50hrs of actual playing time on it even those it has been on in standby mode lately, it is really digging out a lot of information from the grooves :)
One thing, it is dynamic but does soft material very well with that finese when needed. It's a very quiet phono preamp, one of the most quiet ones I have had in my system.
The Phonos also separates all the instruments very well with no hint of congestion or overdriving the input of the preamp. Bas comes through strong when needed and mids are very nice. The highs are nice also with proper decay on notes/cymbals. Also no harshness or fuzziness on music, just clear define notes.
All I can say is I haven't stopped play LP's since I started this morning, it just keeps me wanting to pulls more albums out one after another. No matter what material it is from Jazz to Funk to Classic rock, it does them all very well and that was what I was really after.
Just an FYI, if any of the fellow members here are experiencing low Humidity, I highly recommend a Humidifier. It gets rid of static on the table/record and greatly reduces or even eliminates those crack and pops on the LP if you LP is good condition to begin with. Today I was hearing some ticks and very faint pops, after I turned on the humidifier all that was gone. Just a very quiet lp. I do use the Turntable Labs 3 brush in one cleaning brush and that was creating static so when I pulled off the Lp I could see and hear the affect of the static build up on the platter and LP.
So I truly now have a world class Analog Front End and I'm now finished with that part of my system.

ET-2 Air Bearing linear tracking tonearm
Grado Timbre Reference 3 Cartridge.
SPL Audio Phonos phono preampAs said, all the above is a great match with the Masterpiece 300b preamp.
Now I can concentrate on the Digital side with my focus on the DAC part. Yes, I do listen to both. :)
Thanks to everyone with the help and info on this nice piece SPL Phonos.

Well, I always thought the MP-P1 was a nice sounding Phono preamp for what it cost and with the Mods/upgrades I did. SQ was really good but its weaknesses became very apparent after listen for a few hours compared to the SPL Phonos. The SPL just destroyed the MP-P1 phono preamp!
I'm really happy with the SPL Phonos and how it handles all the music I listen to. I'm really glad I took the chance and bought it.
Cougar - since you like the phonos you should find a Chord dealer and listen to the Qutest model. I have been enjoying mine for almost a year. It is small and uses very little power. It does not use a DAC chip, is uses a custom programmed FPGA device. It has input connections for usb, optical, and bnc connectors. I am currently using a battery power supply to run the Qutest. If you are into the Audio Science Review site they give it one of their highest ratings ever. The Chord products forum is at head-fi, see the link below
Thanks for the recommendation but I'm pretty sure I will be getting he Schiit Yaggy.
I Have a Bluesound Node 2i and I saw some threads on other forum while I was doing some homework on DAC that the Chord match up well with the Node 2i. I don't like the fact that the Qutest on has BNC and Optical inputs. Yes, I can order some BNC to RCA interconnects but for that kind of cash it should come with them in the box. Also seem to not be just a plug and play, seems to have some firmware downloads also.
Cougar - We have parallel situations. Getting the phonos put my vinyl side well ahead of the digital side. I went looking for a new DAC and thought I would end up with the Yaggy so I got a BiFrost to see if I liked the house sound. It was such a bad match to my system that I started another search and ended up with the Qutest.
SS or Tube gear? mine is half SS and half tube. I have been reading up n the sonics of the Chord Qutest, seems good but may not be a good fit for my system, just wish I could try before I buy. At least with the Schiit Yggy I can return it if I don't like like it. I have ready a few reviews the Yggy does need to be left of on and with music for about 10-15 days before any serious listening to done.
The link should get you to my system
Glad you like it. I have found it to be a very competent performer. You are right, it is extremely quiet and very dynamic.
On the digital front, I might recommend Denafrips.
Don't worry about avoiding temptation. As you grow older, it will avoid you.

Hi Ozzy, yes the SPL is another level up in a phono stage in my system, but today I will pull out and hook up my Musical Paradise MC/MM Tube phono preamp since it cold outside (two benefits Music and a heater). It has PSVane 12AX7's in it so this will interesting since I have done some mods to it since it has been out of my system for about two years. Upgraded the caps to Nichicon KX and changed the grounding scheme due to a low level hum. I read up on Audio Note website and saw some info on this. It work and now it just quiet and all hum is gone. So we will see.About the DAC, Like I said in the other post. I will most likely be getting a Schiit Yaggy.
