In Reply to: RE: Amazon LP shipping... posted by ghost of olddude55 on November 18, 2022 at 10:33:28
I have ordered a lot of LP's from Amazon, and that is the predominant shipping configuration I've observed.
There are exceptions, though. I have, from time to time, received LP's in nothing more than a bubble mailer. Nearly 100% of these were promptly returned due to shipping damage.
I have also received some in just an LP mailer. A few of these have been returned due to damage.
Occasionally they'll put an LP inside a shipping box with no LP mailer. Results in this case are generally good, though some have been damaged by other items in the same box (sometimes other LP's in LP mailers) or because the shipping box was damaged.
It's hard to say whether they are converging to a standard or there is a standard (LP mailer inside shipping box) with some deviations.
Target, on the other hand, has been interesting to observe. I have found some good prices online at Target, and gave them a try. The first few shipments were not good - rookie mistakes, to be sure - and I returned the damaged LP's right to a retail Target location. However, in pretty short order, recent shipments have been in LP shipping containers on a par with Acoustic Sounds or Plaid Room.
Follow Ups:
Even when the LP was packed poorly, I've yet to receive one with shipping damage. From any source.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
Percentage-wise, I agree with you. Though I've had a number of returns due to damage, most were shipped incredibly poorly (bubble envelope). I've also had some miraculously undamaged LP's arrive in abysmal packing or mangled boxes.

I got one like that years ago which amazingly fit perfectly in my regulation size mailbox. I was astounded until I opened it and realized the record had broken neatly in half. The seller couldn't understand why that would happen as all his other sales had gone without a hitch...-
And the cardboard mailers aren't any different than what the typical Discogs purchase is shipped in.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
Having found the remains of more than a few LPs in them...album cover art being the 'dental records' or DNA to identify the departed...
