my preference is always with Grundman over most Hoffman's. Gray is spotty his performance seem to vary by a producer he's working with.
Last year we've done a show down between Mofi Milds KOB and 90s Grundman classic reissue. No contest, Classic won in terms of dynamics and in room presence.
We are going to put the Classic reissue against Chad's Clarity Vinyl reissue. but that has not happened yet.
I guess this is subjective. You prefer Hoffman's *seasoning* over Grundman. I'm the other way around.
Follow Ups:
The Kind of Blue Mofi is literally a different mix. Also not done by Hoffman and Gray.
But yeah, Compare the Classics Blue Train to the AP 45 rpm by Hoffman and Gray. IMO no contest. And the Grundman may very well be more accurate. Steve Hoffman had some very specific and pointed opinions about what was wrong with the Ven Gelder original recordings for Blue Note. IME you can go right on down the line and the Gray/Hoffman verisons are way better.
Funny thing, I feel that even the MM records fell off a bit when they stopped using Hoffman. Yeah, he seasons the sound. I like it.

Yes I know. I assume Mofi stuff is done by one of those engineers in the Youtube video.

We'll never know what accurate is. But I know what sounds good to me.
For Music Matter Blue Note releases I prefer post Hoffman remastering. Incidentally I also like the digital transfer Blue Note did back in the 80s by Ron Mcmaster set. Those I prefer over later Van Gelder digital reissues. ( these are CDs )
IMO his sound is warm and rolled off.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
