a place where I could go and talk to 3 people and get a straight up answer and help. Now there's only a Home Depot that's a bit of a trek where one of those guys now works and he knows a shitload of things and is always trustworthy. I've known him for 30 years. Lowes is 5 miles away, HD is 12 but takes 30 minutes to get to with all the traffic here in wonderful NJ.
Home depot usually has better service and products, especially the carpet. I'm loving my new install.
Follow Ups:
The carpet surface now looks like the surface of water after someone drops a big rock in it. Surf's Up!
Later, I had to take them off the hinges and cut the bottoms straight with guide for the circular saw.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?

People who work at Lowes can tell me which aisle something is in, but that's where it ends.
The old style hardware stores, guy could tell me how to fix things and what parts I'd need.

I always overlooked them but had to find stuff that Lowes did not have so I stopped in to a True Value 5 miles south and wow, lots of stuff packed in there and well stocked from the back. Same people always there. There's also an Ace hardware a little further, same for them. Needless to say I now go there first.
in my town is almost like a general store.
When I retire I intend to get a part time job at the local Ace store.
I have a lifetime of DIY experience to share with customers.
I some what consider it a form of civic duty. "giving back" if you will.
.
Freak out...Far out...In out....
were never intended for their original use.
