I bought a new Philips 212 in 1973, often called the poor man's Thorens. I keep it for use with high compliance carts I have: a Stanton 681EEE and an Ortofon OM30. My main table now is a Kenwood 770D, one of the coreless and slotless direct drive models.
Follow Ups:
I owned a Phillips GA212 back in the 70's when it was all the rage. I hated it compared to my Thorens TD165 turntable. It seemed like a toy to me and I unloaded it quick. I used it with a top line Pickering cartridge.

That was pretty much the combination my dad used: a Stanton 681EE (original 2 coil version) with the Philips 212. Great sounding combination to my unsophisticated ears at that age!
