First, while not classic Roy Orbison, the Traveling Wilburys Volume I would also be a strong recommendation of mine. His contributions to that, which is considered to be (and in my opinion, is) one of the all-time great records, are large, and if you don't know the album, you are in for a treat.
I have a few others - the 2 LP set of "All-time Greatest Hits" which has just about everything I need to hear on it, and "In Dreams". I suspect that All-time Greatest Hits contains songs that are re-recordings of originals. Maybe there is an RO maven out there who can shed more light. It is out of print, but I saw it on eBay. I recall Micheal Fremer waxing lyrically about this when it was released (probably as a high-quality reissue) something like 15 years back. OK, I Googled and see that the original came out in 1972, so my copy is an early 21st century reissue.
Orbison just had that ability to really emote while singing, capturing multiple feelings simultaneously. Not too many singers can do this. Linda Ronstadt could as well, so no surprise that she covered the songs RO made hits extremely well.
Follow Ups:
The LPs are in stereo. Does anyone have a listening impression, for SQ? Thanks.
It's a new LP, reissue on Concord in 2016. Maybe that is the one that MF liked so much.
He's one amazing vocalist and romanticist!!! I do have the All time Greatest Hits of Roy Orbison lp which was released on S&P Records on 180 gram vinyl. It was remastered by the well known engineer Steve Hoffman. The vinyl is absolutely awesome. Highly recommended if you can find it. I also have and enjoy "Mystery Girl" which I believe was his last recording. It also is excellent and a personal favorite. Finally, don't overlook "A Love So Beautiful" which is Orbison with the Royal Philharmonic. His voice is incredible with a full symphony orchestra as back-up.. I particularly enjoy the Royal Philharmonic releases - an amazingly creative approach. As you can see I'm also an Orbison fan like you.Sim

The woman who sings "Crying" in Spanish (Llorando) in the movie Mulholland Drive also does a fantastic job. I agree with you that R O had an incredible capacity to elicit an emotional response and make you feel what he was feeling or what the writer of the song was feeling. Thanks for the tips.
