I am a life long fan of Roy Orbison (Elvis's favorite singer). I am even guilty of doing Roy's songs at karaoke bars in Tokyo. And "Llorando" is my favorite moment in "Mulholland Drive". I am also a bona fide vinylista with ~2500 LPs, and yet I have not one single Roy Orbison LP. What two or three of his LPs should I seek, for both content and quality of the recording? Have there been any high quality re-issues? Thanks.
Follow Ups:
Quality of the 180g pressings is superb. I only wish my jazz re-issues were all as good in terms of warps, off-centeredness, and SQ. Spent the afternoon listening . Of the 4 LPs, I like the collection of singles on the Pretty Woman LP best. Thanks for the help navigating the possible choices.Wilburys Vol 1 is on the way to me, according to eBay.

Not a weak song in the bunch. There's also a relatively new re-recording of his hits with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra dubbed in (for lack of a better word) over his vocals called A Love SO Beautiful. I've played it once. Can't recall the sound quality but a solid career retrospective on one album.

"E Burres Stigano?"
i was THRILLED when i discovered it!

Also have the all-time greatest hits reissue on S&P Records, bought years ago, sounds terrific too.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
I have originals on Monument, and the sound quality is amazing.
I ordered the 4-LP set on Monument, to go with Wilbury Vol 1. Thanks, guys.
the man was damn near operatic in his compositions and delivery
my recommendation is to acquire all you can
not very helpful, but that's it
regards,
he had one of the 2 highest recorded voices. the other? caruso.. not bad oompany. of course that means squatto if the singer can not get into a song. happily, that was problem orbison never had. i would love to hear one of his bad renditions (if such a thing exists). in the travelling wilburys, it was to fun to hear his alost casual 'noodling' . but still much better than almost everyones else's best. yup, get all you can find.
Funnily enough, my mother was an opera singer, and she had a 4-octave range, but of course..... she was a girl.
I've nearly injured myself several times trying to sing "Crying" in Roy's key. I have to take it down an octave.
I applaud your taste
a fine songwriter and gifted musician + vocalist
very much a stylist that didn't veer much away from it
but he didn't need to given his consistency
thanks for the reply!
We know who we are, right?
'We know who we are, right?'
yes ... cash strapped music collectors!
regards,
First, while not classic Roy Orbison, the Traveling Wilburys Volume I would also be a strong recommendation of mine. His contributions to that, which is considered to be (and in my opinion, is) one of the all-time great records, are large, and if you don't know the album, you are in for a treat.
I have a few others - the 2 LP set of "All-time Greatest Hits" which has just about everything I need to hear on it, and "In Dreams". I suspect that All-time Greatest Hits contains songs that are re-recordings of originals. Maybe there is an RO maven out there who can shed more light. It is out of print, but I saw it on eBay. I recall Micheal Fremer waxing lyrically about this when it was released (probably as a high-quality reissue) something like 15 years back. OK, I Googled and see that the original came out in 1972, so my copy is an early 21st century reissue.
Orbison just had that ability to really emote while singing, capturing multiple feelings simultaneously. Not too many singers can do this. Linda Ronstadt could as well, so no surprise that she covered the songs RO made hits extremely well.
The LPs are in stereo. Does anyone have a listening impression, for SQ? Thanks.
It's a new LP, reissue on Concord in 2016. Maybe that is the one that MF liked so much.
He's one amazing vocalist and romanticist!!! I do have the All time Greatest Hits of Roy Orbison lp which was released on S&P Records on 180 gram vinyl. It was remastered by the well known engineer Steve Hoffman. The vinyl is absolutely awesome. Highly recommended if you can find it. I also have and enjoy "Mystery Girl" which I believe was his last recording. It also is excellent and a personal favorite. Finally, don't overlook "A Love So Beautiful" which is Orbison with the Royal Philharmonic. His voice is incredible with a full symphony orchestra as back-up.. I particularly enjoy the Royal Philharmonic releases - an amazingly creative approach. As you can see I'm also an Orbison fan like you.Sim

The woman who sings "Crying" in Spanish (Llorando) in the movie Mulholland Drive also does a fantastic job. I agree with you that R O had an incredible capacity to elicit an emotional response and make you feel what he was feeling or what the writer of the song was feeling. Thanks for the tips.

Don't forget Roy's role in The Travelling Wilburys, The First Wilburys album is well worth having
Is that the name of the album, "The First Wilburys"? If not, how would I identify it? I had no idea that RO ever sang as part of a group. I guess that could be historically interesting, but I really want classic RO. Thanks.
The title of the album is "Traveling Wilburys Volume 1" #257961 Warner Communications Co. Album features Otis Wilbur on Keyboards, guitars, and leading and backing vocals; Nelson Wilbury on Guitars, leading, and backing vocals; Charlie T. Jr. Acoustic guitars, lead and backing vocals; Lefty Wilbury on Acoustic guitar and lead and backing vocals; Lucky Wilbury on acoustic guitar and lead and backing vocals.

I am feeling inadequate in that I never knew about this collaboration. But soon I will hear Volume 1, as I just ordered a new copy of a Concord re-issue, off eBay. I'd rather have an original, but I just do not trust buying used LPs without inspecting them first hand. And Concord is usually quality.
Let us know what you think. It's a special; recording in so many ways.
