playing records now. I use an accutrak printed (VE) setup template. I have to be honest it always seems like I hit it right on target on the first try. Happened that way this time anyway. Started off with Johnny Thunders- So Alone (original pressing) , followed by Eno's- Warm Jets (2nd press USA). I have never been good at reporting sound differences between carts. Particularly one with many hours on it, vs. another brand new one that was 3X the price. Perhaps the AT has more refinement and detail than the the 103R. I will say I have no complaints right out of the box. I am going to try and roughly track minutes on this , counting sides played (20 min per). Never done that before, I think I should buy a small handheld click counter.
Just out of interest, what is the plastic gauge thing, on top of the headshell? never seen one of those before...

came with the arm. The arm requires a light headshell/cart combo. Although there may be a heavier counterweight available to allow heavier combos.
I too will be quite interested in your impressions. I almost bought the ART9xi, but then last Thursday I bought the Ortofon Cadenza Bronze instead.
I dream of an America where a chicken can cross the road without having it's motives questioned.
I don't know what the AT-ART9Xi sounds like, but Audio Technica's ultra low-inductance cartridges like the AT-ART7 and AT-ART9XA are some of the best sounding cartridges available regardless of price. I own the AT-ART7 and it sounds far superior to my Denon DL-103SA , which is simply a DL-103R in a special fiberglass composite epoxy body. The AT-ART7 has tighter bass, just as realistic a midrange and smoother, more detailed highs. There's really no comparison. Of course, you need an exceptional phono-stage to extract the best sound quality from ultra low-inductance moving coils.
The Denon DL-103R is an excellent cartridge for its price, but the new Audio Technica ultra low-inductance moving coils are competitive with the finest cartridges available today regardless of price.
