The Ortofon headshell actually 16+ grams, and along with the 103R, weighs 24grams (more than the counterweight will accomodate). I honestly didn't even think of weight being an issue, thinking carbon fiber would be light.
Seems like nothing in this pursuit is easy. I was looking for a second headshell to have a second cart handy.

The epa-100 specs say headshell weight 9.5g cartridge weight range 5 to 10g so you can use a headshell of up to 11g, approximately. For an 8.5g cartridge 15.8g for the headshell is a bit too approximate with the standard counterweight it seems. There are plenty of lighter ones around, even from Ortofon.
Use this one instead - the mass of the headshell is about 12g and with azimuth adjustment as well as having longer slot holes which allows greater flexibility for alternative geometries.
It is made by Jelco and is the same as the HS25 (https://www.jelco-ichikawa.co.jp/cn4/hs-25.html)

LH9000 weighs 18g minus screws and nuts and is not made of CF. Oyaide and Yamamoto CF headshells weigh about 10g.
but upon inspection, there is a small patch of the material on the underside of the mounting area.

The headshell in the advert looks exactly like mine. To tell the truth, I never paid attention to whether it was labeled "CF" or not; I bought it because I wanted a heavy-ish headshell to mate with my Koetsu Urushi. Also because I was in Tokyo, and name brand headshells are far cheaper there than here (as much as 50% price difference), so I bought several during that trip. I weighed it at 18g, and it does work wonders with the Urushi on an FR64S tonearm, already a heavy tonearm. I suspect it is that patch of heterologous material on its undersurface that you mentioned that adds to the mass. If it IS carbon fiber, it is unlike the Yamamoto and Oyaide carbon fiber headshells in that it totally lacks the familiar surface pattern of CF; it's solid black in color, as you know. Anyway, on that same trip to visit my son, I also bought one each of the Yamamoto and the Oyaide CF headshells, which DO have the characteristic pattern of CF and do weigh about 10g each. Actually, as Flood suggested, there are any number of good candidate headshells that weigh less than the LH9000.
Man, that 103 must have a jacked suspension to handle the weight. ;^)

but the combo is too much weight the for arm along with mounting hardware and lead wires. I suppose I can buy another vintage Technics aluminum one for $150.
Why do you find it necessary to buy a Technics headshell. There are others available for much less money. Check the link below. These weigh only 8-grams including cartridge lead wires.
