I don't have a pocket digital scale at my current location, and I wanted one today for my
AR-XA instead of waiting for online purchase.
I went to office stores, hardware stores, jewelry supply stores, our only electronics store(bring back Radio Shack!), Walmart, and Target. No luck. At my final ACE Hardware store, the clerk told me to go to a smoke shop. I don't know how she knew this.
Anyway, I walk into the smoke shop and got immediate results. Never mind the weed, cigars, and e-cigarettes, they had six pocket sized digital scales to choose from! I chose the thinnest and most expensive scale at $21.99. They even guaranteed the scale with a set of weights.
So now, I have the most accurate scale for the most inaccurate movement of a counterweight on the AR-XA.
Follow Ups:
I use a similar digital scale to check my other scales, and vice versa. Both of my balance scales, one shure, the other B and O, check perfectly well against the digital scale.
The harbor freight scale I use was about the same cost, plastic, requires two AAA batteries, has multiple settings, and is designed so that the protective cover slides underneath , turning into an attached base.
It weighs coins accurately , which I used for accuracy testing. I am not sure that the old axiom of staying within the center of a measuring tools range applies just as well to electronic strain gauge measurements, since the deflection is measured electronically. It is sensitive enough to measure the acceleration upon movement when not placed on a solid surface.
I can't imagine a need for a lot of suppliers for the chip that runs these scales, I suspect the different scales available are the same chip running different configurations of scales. I guess if yours runs on other than two AAA batteries, as does the harbor freight, it is using a different chip. I would suspect the cheapest serviceable chip would be harbor freights first choice for construction, along with most others selling like merchandise.
I agree about the accuracy of scales with a weight range far exceeding the VTF of a typical cartridge. I use a My-Weigh scale (Durascale D2) that can measure up to 300g and yet accurately measures cartridge VTF within +/-0.01g. I use a DIY offset platform made from a credit card and hold it in place using a 100g weight so I'm not taking measurements at the lowest end of the range. The scale came with a 300g calibration weight and I have a 5.00g weight to check.
My SME 309 has a very precise counterweight adjustment mechanism so it's easy to make very small changes in VTF. Despite the Durascale's ability to measure up to 300g, I can reliably measure 0.01g changes in VTF in the range of 1.5g to 2.2g.

If you are using the scale to measure VTF, be aware there are some cartridges with magnets strong enough to collapse the cantilever if the weighing platform is made of an alloy with ferromagnetic metal. Most are made from aluminum, but some are not.

Had you availed yourself of some of the shop's other goodies, you would have forgotten completely about Vertical tracking force and saved yourself $22!

......how the Ace Hardware clerk knew to tell you to go there.😵
Speculation is simple. Always has been and will be. However, it proves nothing.

The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?

if vinyl or coke is your thing then pick a 5 gram scale for greater accuracy as in 1.20 grams and not on a 1% basis like that one. Just sayin

of my new digital scale is plenty for me. I also cannot be picky, when this store was the only game in town that could provide a scale immediately. I also picked the scale with the smallest range in the store. A couple of the others had ranges of zero to 600 grams.
I've kept it all these years for various reasons. So what's your point big boy?

I'm just saying that the accuracy of the scale I just purchased is fine for me, especially after using my Shure scale previously. The digital scale is so easy to use as well. That Shure scale combined with the difficult adjustment of the AR-XA counterweight was a nightmare.
When I first used the Shure scale yesterday on the AR-XA, I must have made 20+ attempts to set my desired VTF. I finally learned that tightening the set screw on the AR-XA counterweight moves the counterweight forward resulting in a .04 gram weight increase.
since the weight of nickels or pennies can vary up to .2 grams in my previous post:
"The 1 gram weight will always be a reference for 1.XX grams if you can verify the exact weight and write it on the weight with a marker. Mine is a consistent 1.02 grams. That way any electronic one can be checked for accuracy"
So, use a coin and weigh it a few times and write the weight on it with a marker, it will be your reference weight. If I used a 100g scale in my Lab duties to weigh samples that only weighed 1 gram the lab supervisor would have written me up for violations. 2 times and they would have fired me. I have the same 100 gram scale as you that I use for weighing things but it's accuracy I've found to vary a bit on measuring <5, and with age has gotten worse and I don't use it much; only the one that goes no higher than 5 grams. I looked for a while but couldn't find the name as it had no I.D.
I'm a stickler for this because it only takes one play to ruin the precious vinyl from mistracking, and humans make errors.

assistant in a physiology lab in college, but I mostly played with mercury. There should be some mutated fish nearby.
I really had no choice for the weight range for what was available at the smoke shop. I was thinking like you though, and that's why I chose the scale with the lowest weight range. Too bad it is 100 grams. I did feel happy when the nickel measurement was so close.
I was trying to achieve 1.25 grams with the Shure M97xe, but I finally settled for 1.31 grams after several attempts with that AR-XA counterweight. Very frustrating, and got tired of fighting.
vinyl is like a girl who used to get in fights at an early age, has a few scars here and there, wears well worn clothing for comfort, but has private behaviors only the boyfriend/husband would know.
Everyone here knows vinyl well. There are reasons vinyl is a reference sound which, as always, is a topic of repeated disagreement with the 'digital only' users.
