I'm listening tonight to a recording made circa 1956 and transcribed on Westminster Hi-Fi and it is absolutely outstanding. Great soundstage and imaging, precision in reproduction. With the Westminster Labs las these guys were pushing the envelope and clearly succeeded.
Follow Ups:
From the Laboratory Series label... Recordings are limited to 17 minutes per side and cut at a maximum peak level of 14cm/sec " and have a range of 54 db, the widest range possible for reproduction in the home on optimal equipment." "All Westminster Laboratory records eliminate groove-echo by being cut ar 190-216 lines to the inch."
Westminster was an independent label without the clout or reach of the big labels.
Collectors overlook Westminster because they are not RCA LSC/ Mercury LP / London BB. Bad for them, good for us because prices are cheap and the LPs sound phenomenal !
to the price of the Sherwood S-5000 integrated amp that was so heavily praised on the vintage asylum? That used to be a reasonably priced vintage piece for refurbishing, and untested pieces are now going for around $500. Some eBay sellers are asking $2000 to $3000 for refurbished units.
I do have a lot of the latter Westminsters with the clever covers and wonder how they sound compared to the mono Westminsters. The Westminster monos are still in thrift stores up here, even though everything else I like has dried up.
Jerry's Records in Pittsburgh has a lot of them. When Jerry Weber ran the store he generally charged $4 each. The new owner has raised prices across the board but classical still tends to be cheap because there's practically no demand for it here.
I haven't bought any because they're in mono.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
if they're still sealed & reasonable $$ you should buy them, at least a few
you'll probably have an investment grade purchase
regards,
Westminster Collectors Series, and maybe a couple mono XWN prefixes. I have never seen a sealed Westminster mono.
Mostly in the Asian market.
They've recognized the inherent value in those performances/pressings for over
20 years and have been more than willing to pay good money to own them.

all down the line.
The fact that there are hidden musical treasures within just ads to their enjoyment.

I have a number of Westminster mono recordings and they are by and large very well recorded.
For perfect tone use Columbia Needles
For Best results use Victor Needles
For best results use OKEH Needles
I agree. The Shubert String Quartet series is beautifully recorded and performed. I found the the complete set in a thrift for a quarter each..with a little cleaning they are wonderful
