I grew up in Tucson and I can't think of a band that was more universally liked than Lynyrd Skynyrd. Maybe the Eagles. This was the early 70s and honestly I don't recall anyone in any of groups I would hang with having a Beatles album (our older brothers & sisters did) - but nearly everyone had Eagles and Skynyrd LPs.As far as the writers and critics they seemed to take somewhat a hit because they were compared to the Allman Brothers. I never thought that was a fair comparison but then again it didn't take me long not to pay much attention to critics. What was it they said, and I've heard many a book worm repeat - "Lynyrd Skynyrd is a poor/uneducated mans Allman Brothers". Just another elitist COS.
You're right about Ronnie Van Zandt. After the accident the band could never be the same.

a good friend of mine was hired by the Rossington-Collins band and played out with them ... he said they paid well ... which is nice
regards,
Van Zandt wrote great lyrics. Better than any of the Allman Brothers did.
Sadly, for many people up here, they're part of a joke, the punch line of which is "Free Bird."
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
And Led Zeppelin. The Free Bird thing obviously aren't Skynyrd fans. There's a number of great songs of which Call Me the Breeze is a JJ Cale song and it kicks the shit out of the original IMO. Yes RVZ was a great songwriter.
Just to clarify my original comment I went back in and put quotes on the comment I've heard more than a couple of times in the past.
That last part is what I thought of the comment but it probably all ran together when others read it.

Free Bird is a classic! ... it was the most requested song at live concerts for years no matter who the act was ... it also spiked sales of Bic lighters during that time making it the most popular 'bastard gas' disposable of all timeso there's that

it's equated with bad cover bands, boozed-up redneck fans, and summertime street fairs that benefit local volunteer fire departments.
Guarantee before the band takes the stage that they'll play "Free Bird."

'that benefit local volunteer fire departments'
at least there's a noble outcome if not purpose
plus cheap PBR & Pearl tall-boys!!
does Pearl make those? I can't remember
regards,
I can drink bourbon, gin, vodka straight but beer just isn't my thing.

even sloe gin?
man did I ever have a bad experience with the poison known as the sloe gin fizz
*hurl*
We also consumed Dinty Moore beef stew with that while camping. For some reason, I cannot eat or smell Dinty Moore beef stew anymore.
for some reason? you need a reason besides the rubberized 'biff' or whatever the hell it is they market as 'beef' in those cans? it smells like dog food cooking for a reason
kidding aside we all have those associations ... strawberry milkshakes will still give me the stomach rolls
regards,
You have to drink the pure, top shelf booze if you want to avoid a hangover.

oh now you tell me ... where were you when I needed that advice at 17 ??
good thing I learn from my mistakes, only did that about 12 more times
different booze though
you don't have to hit me with a 2X4 too many times before I figure out I don't like it
