I'm starting to experiment with an Eagle/Roadrunner set up on my VPI Aries and I thought one of the features is a soft start but I'm not getting that. The motor just jumps to 33, causing a little belt squeel as it starts. Hoping that I'm just missing something in the set up?
Follow Ups:
If you want a soft start that works perfectly, buy the new Condor/Roadrunner. It starts my 15-lbs platter without a whimper and it's up to speed in less than two revolutions. Three-phase is the only way to go.
Got it. But back when you used to like the Eagle, did the soft start work? That's my question. I don't have a SOTA Condor in the house. Yet.
I never used an Eagle because my SOTA Millennia turntable didn't have a synchronous motor. Consequently, I replaced the motor with a 3-phase AC synchronous motor included with a prototype of Phoenix Engineering's Condor/RoadRunner system. Since it's a prototype system, it uses the Eagle enclosure but it's actually a 3-phase Condor system. Now, SOTA Sound Inventions, LLC is manufacturing the Phoenix Engineering Condor/RoadRunner system .
I have a friend who uses the Eagle/RoadRunner with his VPI Prime turntable and the belt still slips during startup. Therefore, I think you need a true three-phase system with constant torque in order to eliminate belt slip during startup. Before I installed the Condor system on my SOTA Millennia, its belt always slipped during startup. I use to give the spindle clamp a twist at startup to prevent it from slipping.
Good luck,

Thanks for the further info John! I stupidly didn't think to give it a spin before turning the motor on.
I'm close to pulling the trigger on the Condor. I would need their motor pod too so that adds to the cost and I'm concerned about the aesthetic with the Aries. The other option would be to send my motor pod to them for retrofit but that would take months because SOTA is so backed up with orders, which is a bummer but good for them! Great people.
Does your Condor motor have a bit of mechanical hum? I know this was an early complaint. Have they worked that out? Or is that just inherent in that particular motor. I know it's not passed through the speakers so it's nothing I'm too worried about, more curious.
No, my Condor three-phase AC motor is dead quiet. I didn't realize there were complaints about motor noise with the Condor system. My old SOTA motor made noise but the new Condor motor is dead quiet. It's an industrial motor with a quarter-inch shaft and ball-bearings on both ends. It's dead quiet in my system.Good luck,
John Elison
