If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing well

I believe that's wishful thinking. How can any turntable retrieve lost information? Are you suggesting the turntable is able to generate information that no longer exists? Are you saying the turntable somehow knows the correct information that the cutting lathe failed to reproduce? That would be magic, wouldn't it? I know the Air Force Zero looks like it's capable of magic, but I really doubt it is. Of course, you never know! Perhaps Michael Fremer is a magician. ;-)

But honestly I'd rather take as big a stack of those records as I could carry. The man has an awesome record collection.
and the music within.
The equipment is just extreme bling.
Like most bling it's actually tacky looking.

Just like me.
If only that WAS a Buick, he could drive it to his barber. Assuming both were vaccinated, of course.
Must get some serious reflections off that thing being in front of the Wilsons. Valin's room looked kinda like that too. Lots stuff everywhere.

You're all wrong. It's his old Saab he had converted....
And is that a Bybee nuclear power generator in his closet?
I hope it is in front of the records he doesn't want to listen to.
This was a beast of a table that was very heavy. Great build quality and all but.... I didn't care for how it sound. It was to me lifeless almost average sounding. It was going through some great gear too, Mark Levinson TOTL gear. I was shocked at how it sound, I was expecting more from this table.
maybe not fair to blame the Thorens for underwhelming sound.
Is that a cork or rubberized mat?
Not sure about the platter surface, though.
Thinking about his take on the sound.
But yea the Air Force thing in MFs room is pretty cool too!
Hey Goober58, sorry I didn't see your post asking me about the Thorens Reference table.
The mat I didn't get a good look at when I was there listening to it. I was so busy just looking it over and in awe of how big that that table was in person. I think it was like a heavy felt type platter mat but I could be wrong as I'm going by memory. The sound was good but not what would have expected for the size and weight of this table. It was nothing really special. There was a Basis table there too that I thought sound way better. I remember my friend that owned the store saying it took two people to pick it up. In all fairness he did say he didn't really get to much into the setup of the table. I remember after a few songs I lost interest and walked away. He did offer it to me but I just laughed and walked away.
I'm not a Thorens fan but that looks like a big chunk of cork or plastic and I thought maybe that was making it sound a bit unimpressive. But then cartridges can do it too. When I owned a Planar 3 I used to really like the Dynavector 10x4. But after I moved to the Roksan and up the Dynavector line I discovered myself being unimpressed with TT demos if they were using to 10x4. Or a Blue Point. Even worse a good TT/cart combo running into the Creek phono section.
Lots of stuff can spoil a demo of a turntable and it seems the better the table the more susceptible it will be to cart and phono section. But even a platter mat could F it all up.
Who knows - it too is a very impressive looking turntable.
Having said all that I'm often disappointed the sound of high priced turntables. They often sound more lifeless than I prefer them to sound.

I tried a few different mats just for fun but Chris Brady was correct about it sounding better without any mat. Yes, I did adjust the VTA to compensate for the slight height difference for each mat. I tried a Linn felt mat, Ring Mat, and Merrill's R.C.C. Turntable Mat.
All these changed the SQ of my table with the only one that was close to no mat was the R.C.C. Turntable Mat. But in the end, it was with NO Mat that sound the best, so I have kept that way.

One of these (or similar) attached to the ceiling and a proper winch and no doubt he can fit
more stuff into that room.
Who knows, could advantageously tweak the room sound too.
With Fremer's manic energy though he gives me the impression he NEVER sits still for very long.
I suppose 45RPM LPs are less a PIA for him than for most of us.
