That's what I have been told by PAR below, but I confess that it's difficult for me to classify what I was hearing as "hum". It was a very low frequency pulsing sound - kind of a WUH WUH WUH WUH sound that began to escalate very quickly until I could hear the subs woofers bottoming out. Nasty stuff, to be sure, and it only happened when the stylus was in contact with an album. That sounds like feedback to me, but I know just enough about vinyl playback to be dangerous, so frankly my opinion doesn't count for much.
ah ... well a ground loop + EMI is a feedback loop
usually feedback = sympathetic reinforcing sound [resonate] vibrations
it could have been in play as it became loud enough for the T/T arm to PU
yeah, weird ... anyway, glad you got rid of it
