The photos fail to reveal what is being used as a platter mat. A few years ago I was preparing my 24-year-old AR for sale, having acquired an admirable Michell Gyro SE as the replacement. I ditched the AR felt mat and installed a Herbies Way Excellent II mat.
This elevated the performance of the AR to such an extent that I wondered why I had bothered to outlay so much money on the Gyro.
I cleared my conscience when I added the Michell HR power supply unit, which took the Gyro out of this world. But I could have lived with the AR plus Herbies.
Follow Ups:
Was any AR model available with a felt mat? Or was that pirated from a Linn?
I'm only familiar with the AR-XA and all of those I've seen had foam mats.

"The AR Turntable" and other 80's models came with felt.
I'm in a winter environment with plenty of static - how is the Herbies with this?

The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
