I'm having a really hard time attaching headshell leads to a Fidelity Research FR-S/3. It's a short stubby thing and I'm trying to find some flexible leads to fit. The thing is I can never get the leads to attach properly. I'm making the hole in the tag either too big or too small. Is there a better tag out there somewhere? Is there an easier way to do this?
I know is mostly operator error but it's still frustrating!!

adding to what Mr. green said, the best way is to buy yourself a set of forceps. You might also buy a micrometer for measuring the cartridge pins. Parts Express is one place to buy these. Make sure they are not the largest ones available, you need precision.
Once you have a dimension on the pins (which varies on manufacturers), you can carefully squeeze each lead to a slightly smaller size by inserting a tool into the lead end. I use different things like sewing needles, resistor/capactor leads etc. If you don't do this the 'squeeze' may collapse the lead end.
Do NOT squeeze the end of the lead where it first contacts the pin, do it AFTER toward the wire where it solders. Then the lead will insert easily and fitment will increase and make a tight connection - but not too tight and push the cart pin back into the cart (it happens).
You can also buy deoxit from PE and apply a tiny bit to the pins to allow an easier insertion and anti-corrosion.
good luck!

Or do what I did, have a deep laceration requiring stitches as an on-the-job and get both straight and curved stainless steel Hemostats from the seamstress, errr, Surgical Nurse for free.
When I asked, she gave me a look, "I know what you want these for". I told her the Sixties were a long time ago and they were for my electronics building hobby. I'm not sure that was believed but she told me they got tossed anyway so here you go.

I use an eyebrow tweezer borrowed from my wife so long ago that she's forgotten all about.

I always have a good time in ER's.
My Junior Year Abroad my roommate and I dump our bike on some ice and both of us have the same badly damaged kneecaps. Bike runs OK so we ride down to the famous Radcliffe Infirmary and check into the ER. It's late at night and a couple of bored interns come in and inject our knees with local pain killer saying someone will be in to clean the wound.
So this even younger than us girl comes in wearing that cute little hat carrying a soapy water tray and a vegetable brush, and begins half-halfheartedly dabbing at the gravel encrusted wound. It dawns on me she's clueless about the local anesthetic we got; that the almost-a-doctor boys are having some fun with her. So I grab the brush and begin scrubbing away at my knee. Her eyes got big, then rolled back and my roommate grabbed her before she hit the floor. Poor thing.

I caved. You should too.
There's absolutely nothing here anymore but but the rehashed past. At least Ole Man River Valley introduced us to a hipsterism, Rule 34.
Now back to obsolete mid-fi cartridges and tables no one cares about.

The way I do it after ripping out too many leads in the old days, is to attach the leads with the fingers, before attaching the cartridge to the head shell. If you use pliers, etc....you make it more difficult.
Thanks, that makes sense. I just can't get them the right size. The headshell and the cartridge have different sized pins. Maybe a new set of leads has softer tags and that makes them easier to attach?
..just attach the larger pins that fit, and then put the large pins on, and squeeze them shut.....Do with when the cartridge is not attached to the head.
Ahh! Ok, thanks.
