I picked up a Lab 500 table the other day, and it played fine at the seller's home. By the time I tested it out today I found that the tonearm is binding, and the auto-start function is not lifting the tonearm & placing it on the record. I took a look at all of the trouble-shooting from the service manual, and did a thorough cleaning of the old lubrication, but to no avail.
I'm considering removing the automatic functions & just using this as a manual table, but would like to try one more time to get this figured out.
TIA
John

Peculiar indeed. Have you moved the tonearm while watching the internal workings to make sure nothing is physically interfering? Some disassembly may be required first. It sounds like something in the return/start feature may be the problem. Depending on where your paitent level is with these things (mine is pretty low) you may have to go with the manual table. I have done this with several older units over the years and they still play records just fine. Good Luck!

Thanks, but I did download the service manual and went through all of the suggestions (as I mentioned) to no avail. The weird thing is that the tonearm moves fluidly when the table is on it's side (while cleaning/adjusting) but returns to binding when horizontal.
I'm pretty sure it correlates to the fact that the auto-start function doesn't work...
I would be very suspicious of this component
"The automatic return function is tripped by a special optoelectronic semiconductor device - assuring no change in turntable speed, even at the end of the record"
this must involve a PID controller
look at the Wiki link under 'Control Damping'; damn near states what you've described as the malfunction. if you could get a replacement ... hmmm?
regards,
meaning what precautions did you take for transport?
I removed the headshell, the tonearm weight, and secured the tonearm (not my first rodeo)...
