I have a Rega Planar 3 with an SME III tonearm, and I would like to try something different. I know that some guys love them, but I find the SME to be very complex to set up properly.
I know that Mission and Infinity Black Widow tonearms use an SME mounting pattern, but I am wondering what others will bolt-on to the Rega plinth. Here is a photo of the mount on my turntable.
Sorry, Donald, there just isn't enough of Mount Rushmore left to carve that bowl of mashed potatoes on your head, but maybe we could get them to do your tiny hands.

Some of the Jasmine arms use the universal base adaptor that fits SME ...

Hi ,
My Odyssey RP1 XG MK2 also uses the SME mounting pattern .

The ADC ALT-1 that I have not got around to using yet has an SME base. I don't know if they all come this way or not, nor do I know in what esteem it is held in the vinyl community. FWIW I have an Infinity Black Widow on a Sota Sapphire deck with a low output Grado wood body and it sounds pretty damned good:)
I have always wanted to try and ADC tonearm. Where in Ontario are you?

Near Montreal, Quebec. The arm will eventually be installed in a Roksan Xerxes, which came with SME pattern.
I was going to ask if you wanted to sell it, but if you have a use for it I will just move the Rega along and work on another project. As I recall, the Infinity Black Widow was made by ADC, and there are a lot of similarities. Enjoy!

There really is not another tonearm besides the Black Widow( not so good IMO), the Mission which might be functional and the Mayware that are reasonably good for using star quality MM cartridges which require light mass tonearms. If you had access to the Mayware I would agree that it might be good to sell your SME. However, your SME III might be the only aged quality light mass tonearm that you encounter at all and the SME III is a superb match for MM carts of quality. I have the shell of a V15VxMR which would shine in your arm(Never found the Mayware that I wanted. Only broken...)

It isn't very good at all. I was hoping to learn that I was overlooking an obvious choice to replace the SME with little or no drama. It doesn't look like I will keep the Planar 3, and I have already sold the SME. It went very quickly actually.

a very good combo. Used both a Shure V15 Type IV with Jico SAS stylus and a Grace F9E.

My only real complaint was that there were only a very few cartridges that worked well with it. That wasn't a real problem back in the 80s when low-mass cartridges were believed to be the answer, but most cartridges today would be unsuitable. I certainly wouldn't recommend a moving coil with it.

Of course, only high compliance carts worked well with it. It wasn't the mass of the cart, so much as the compliance. In fact, the Widow and possibly the 5g SME III were the only arms capable of handling the original ADC XLM, which had insanely high dynamic compliance.
Opus 33 1/3
That is correct. I used an Ortofon LM30 with mine, then a Grace F9E. High-compliance was deemed to be the way to do it back then, but thankfully that thinking is no longer in vogue.

I still have my Grace F-9E cartridge body. I won't ever get around to replace the stylus, but it was one of my all-time favourites. I still use an F-10L MOMC on my Linn Sondek.

I was glad to get rid of the Black Widow, but I really wish that I had kept my F-9E Ruby. I have an F-9 body still and I understand that Soundsmith sells replacement styli for it, but ordering anything from the US is a big problem now.

I sold my F-9 body this morning, but I would rather see someone enjoy it than to have it sit in a drawer for another 30 years.
I don't really have a suitable tonearm for it, and I have plenty of other cartridges to play with.

" I have a Rega Planar 3 with an SME III tonearm, and I would like to try something different".
Why? what do you want to achieve? Without an answer then basically anything will do so long as it comes with an SME mount. Which covers a huge number of tonearms.
You cite two tonearms that are so different ( Black Widow and Mission) that you need to know upfront what cartridge you are using (no information provided ). Or the budget you have to spend (no information again).
My advice? First read up on basic tonearm/cartridge requirements and compatibility.

I have several turntables and dozens of cartridges, so I am well-aware of the need to match tonearms with cartridges based on mass and compliance. I was really just thinking of a project to work on. It certainly won't be a main turntable by any means, and I will likely just sell the Rega without an arm and be done with it. Sometimes a simple question just requires a simple answer. Thanks anyway.

Trust me on that.
The Acos Lustre uses the SME-type cutout also.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
Yeah, I am familiar with the Vestigal. It makes the SME III look simple. I just sold the SME, so I will have to look for something. Either that, or I DIY some sort of modification to the plinth. It would be a shame though, because my Planar 3 is in beautiful condition.

Decent arm and some models use the angled slot for setting overhang. Rega used Acos arms on the early models.

if needed when mounting their tonearm. I haven't needed to use that option but it seems like it would work. Maybe not as well as a correctly cut board for the arm. But it is an option.
The sale seems to have fallen-through, so I might end up keeping the SME and just learn how to set it up properly. Thanks for the reply.

You can look for a Graham arm. Many of them were made with an SME mount. You can also buy one of these that will adapt the mount to many many arms.
