In Reply to: RE: 15 classic obscure albums from the second half of the 60s ... posted by bjh on July 20, 2017 at 15:40:36
Most of these albums are not obscure at all and come from bands with top 20 hits in either the album or singles charts. For example Left Banke and Harpers Bizarre had top then hits both sides of the Atlantic.
Tyrannosaurus Rex became T Rex and were the biggest band in the UK in the early 70s.
Even if the band were not to hit gold their individual members may have e.g. Jeff Lynne with Idle Race. Heard of ELO or Travelling Willburys? How about Robert Wyatt from Soft Machine? Tomorrow featured Steve Howe of ( almost immediately afterwards ), Yes.
The Incredible String Band were huge both in the UK and USA.
You are simply too young to remember :-)
Follow Ups:
I agree about the (non-) obscurity of most of the artists, but I just picked up the Left Banke album after all these years and I am very impressed. There's some great songwriting and arrangements on it.
BTW, the Zombies came to the Strand Bookstore in New York a few months ago to promote their new book about Odyssey and Oracle . They have a great sense of humor and it was fascinating.
I'm sure you're correct but they'd have left me less flat if had picked Feelin' Groovy instead of that other punishing tune by Harpers Bizarre ...to say nothing of that frightening video ... I'd think I'd have become a Hillbilly or a Jesuit if had been exposed to that at too early an age! .
Or weren't influenced by the right substances "-) ;-)
