I have an early Model 10 and it locks on at the correct speed in a matter of a second. I also have a much more recent Model 20 and this takes up to 20 seconds to lock on especially when the weather is hot. On cold days it is much quicker but never as quick as the 10. The speed controller was updated between my 10 and the 20 and by the sound of it you have the later speed controller as I imagine that was used across all models.
So I would say that what you are experiencing is normal operation but it never hurts to contact the company as they are excellent with service.
Worth checking though is the cleanliness of the motor spindle, the sub platter and the belt itself as if there's any slippage this might be causing the lock on delay. If the motor is the same on your model as mine there is a small trough to place in a spot of oil once a year and it's not unknown to accidentally drip a bit of oil close to the spindle.
Let us know if you contact SME as I'm interested in their reply.

Thanks for your input.
I think I will again check and clean the belt, motor pulley, and subplatter. It makes sense there could some oil contamination, as I did add one drop of oil to the motor trough when I first set it up.
If that doesn't improve things, I will contact SME and let you know what they tell me.
20-30 seconds is not at all out of line for a typical belt-drive to get up to set speed. Many take longer. Depends upon motor torque, belt friction, and mass of the platter, so will be different for each design.
The SME motors seem to give a hard push at start up and then slow to settle at their set speed so you end up with them settling at 78 rpm and 45 rpm quicker than at 33 as the mass of the significant platter is slowed.
Finished re-cleaning the motor pulley, sub platter, and belt last evening. The SME 10 now locks to correct speed in approximately 10-12 seconds, so it appears there was some remaining oil contamination on at least one of those items.
So, all is well, and I will not need to bother SME (for now).
Thanks to all for replies and suggestions.
